A. Dickey, Hair Rules salon
Has anyone with 3A or 3B hair every had their hair cut by A. Dickey?
My hair has not been the same since I used that horrible Living Proof and I might try him since I am not having any good hair days.

Can't slip anything past you, C 19 . You are absolutely right. I'm smiling that you noticed - it made me feel important which is particularly helpful today (problems on sister front).
I like the lady I saw better than anyone before her - and that's saying a lot.
The only problem I have is that my hair lies flat at the top. I think it needs to be layered more. I asked her for that both times that I saw her but it didn't happen, and I read somewhere that Dickey thinks the biggest problem with 3a/3b hair is that we lack volume on top.
I also liked her very much personally, more than any other stylist. She is smart, literate, accommodating and a pleasure in every way - except I don't think she knows how to make the top have some volume. I can't seem to master any clipping routine and diffusing upside down leaves my hair a mess.
So I'm going to hold my breath and try Dickey tomorrow. If it's no better than the woman I was seeing, I'll go back to her. He charges more than twice what she charges (groan). She got terrific, well deserved reviews. I feel a little guilty, but I'm going to give it a shot. Will report back. And for noticing {{{Claudine19}}}

Well, remember that for a time you considered considering yourself a 2, and lack of volume on top is one of our trademarks.
However, maybe he can do something different. Please report back with results!

Will do. Today my hair bears a distinct resemblance to Gilda Radner's famous do.

Bear in mind that "humidity kills" (shape).

^^^Yup. This is true.
Well, I'm going today at 10 (excited!) and hope for a miracle. . It's a horrendously humid day today so it will be a good test. I'm also interested to see how they style my hair. He's supposed to be great with 4A hair which isn't me.
Maybe we need an acronym for stylist junkie - like pj for product junkie - a person who is forever in search of the HG stylist. Will post back.

i also remember your posts about your other stylist. :-)
my stylist, carlos flores, would not cut the layers short on top, cuts off the curl for 3A hair, and anyway always cuts longish layers for all curl types. shorter pieces here and there, but never short. but, it sounds like you definitely need more layers, some shorter, if you have the dreaded pyramid! and, you can have shorter pieces around your face, too. for whatever reason, i think over the last two years my hair has become more moisturized?? and i don't have that flat top, more volume, waves, curls. not that i'm 3b, altho i have some 3b pieces, just not flat. i'd say it is wavy on the very top. i see in your signature you use cj curl rehab for dts, maybe try the cj deep fix for a bit. i use both, but i do find the deep fix to be more moisturizing. i even use it as a leave in!!!
isn't a. dickey the stylist who cuts sarah jessica parker's (aka carrie bradshaw LOL!) hair?
definitely post pictures!! have fun!

RBB - thanks a million! I will definitely try the deep fix. My hair gets dry because I color it and when I do that I use a sulfate poo because I'm always afraid of leaving some color in if I use a lo poo.
I have a question for you: I like the Jane Carter N&S but I also worry that a low poo won't remove it. Have you found that to be the case? What do you use as a shampoo or lo poo?
Yes, Dickey cut Sarah Jessica's hair, but who knows what he used on her - I have read that he sometimes uses curling irons. I don't think he is necessarily CG at all. I'm just hoping for a good cut, but maybe the answer is that I need a moisturizer. I really did like Cristin at Takamichi a lot. Hope I am not wasting my money today.
I'll post back and if I can figure out how to use my crappy cell phone, I'll try to do a picture. I know how to take pics, just not sure I save them properly. BTW, your hair looks gorgeous if that is you in the picture and the color is amazing.

CurlyPearl, I don't know if this is any help to you but there is a 'Groupon for Salons' type of offering called TheFlyCut.com. This week there is a coupon for 50% off for an Anthony Dickey cut. There are limited supplies, so check it out. Here is the link:

yes, thanks, that is me, my hair. it still looks that way as i've decided that this is the best length for my hair now that it has that gray texture and for my face.
jane carter -- i only use it and other sealants sometimes in winter, low dews. i just cowash usually, low poo once a week, up to 2x week depending on what i am using. i don't have any problems getting it out of my hair. now straight oils, that is a nightmare for my hair!
as far as shampooing after coloring, i continued to color my hair for 3 years after i became cg and i always only used a low poo and washed the color out the minute i got home. i always did a dt immediately after. i know they say you are supposed to let the color set, but i never did. anyway, the low poo got all the residue out. the dt kept it conditioned.
btw, you are right, hair rules products are not cg. so i'd use your shampoo when you got home or next day, then maybe a dt.
it sounds like you live in manhattan? if you do, ricky's ny (3 locations in manhattan) are now carrying curl junkie products.

You're telling me! I wish I had half the money back I've already spent on "special" cuts.

The verdict: Love the haircut hate the product he used. Sorry it took so long to update - I wanted to see what it looked like after I did it myself.
Dickey read my mind. Before I said anything, he said he thought the length was just right, and that all that was needed was some layering/shaping on top. And that is exactly what he did and now I am not flat on top. Yea!!!! Amazing.
Dickey also recommended:
1) Use a mousse rather than a gel because it weighs hair down less
2) Put product in damp rather than dripping hair because sopping hair flattens at the scalp as the water drips down
3) Use a special type comb to lift hair at the scalp as I diffuse it. He wasn't trying to sell the comb to me - he showed me two styles - said they were both from Ricky's.
The haircut cost much less than I expected and they didn't push the products at all. I was in such a gaga state that I bought the mousse even though I didn't like it since it made my hair stiff. My brain wasn't registering anything except that I had height on the top for the first time since I went curly
I liked the lighter effect so I'm going to research and buy a cg mousse.
Meanwhile, I am very, very happy! Thanks and {{{Hugs}}} to everyone who kept me company on this hair journey and Suns, thanks for the coupon! Didn't see it until after I had gone.
