Default Something different

Hello,

I have been lurking and looking for good routine advice on here for a bit and decided to join. Seems to be a wealth of info and good advice!

I have mid length 3b hair, sometimes I straighten it or 'loosen' it, sometimes just let the curls do their thing. I'm currently growing out dye and am fighting temptation to do my roots! I figure one day I'll go grey and I'll probably want to dye my hair, so 'til then, I'm giving it a break.

I will be losing a couple of inches soon so that I don't end up with a load of spilt ends (I have some forming now). I'd actually love a new style, though. I'm quite into the idea of going short. I haven't had short hair for about five years now. I like how Alicia Keys is wearing hers atm - the short bob. Bit scary but I might go for something similar.

Any curlies out there got experiences of going short? I know a lot want to grow their hair as long as possible. I just fancy a change for a bit and something that's lower maintenance!

Thanks : D

Quite honestly, I had short hair almost all my life, and I'm finding longer hair to be lower maintenance.

I have had short hair at times and it seems I straighten more often when it's short. I am happier with my curls with a little length. Good luck it's a tough decision but it will grow out.

Here's a thread about curly bobs: Curly Bobs Unite! What's to like about it.

I've been wearing my inverted bob for a little over 4 years. It's the first time in my 30+ years of wearing it curly that I feel that I have a style.

Thanks for all your replies. And thanks for the link, kathymack. I really like inverted/graduated bobs. I think that's sort of what Alicia has!

There probably are cons too - like I know I won't be able to put it up as I can now. But I'm stilll into the idea. I think it would be good for my hair too - it's feeling a bit dry atm... could be to do with humidity, though (which sounds weird!)

The more I think about it the more I want to do it. I hope it will improve overall condition in the long run - or am I being unrealistic? I'm sure it was better last time I had a lot cut off (long time ago, as I said!) I also really hate my hair at the back - it doesn't co-operate! For that reason I'd like the back very short and blending into the rest of the haircut. (I mean done with clippers but as part of the rest - not a random shaved bit.) Does this make sense? I'm not sure what I say to a stylist...?

If I hate it, then I guess I'd have to live with it for a few months. Oh idk. Isn't it funny how fussy we get over hair... lol

When you get into all the great information here, you are going to move into a direction that will have your hair in better condition and split ends will be a thing of the past!

Have fun with it all... it was a great journey for me.

Thanks and yes I will update. The chop (me being melodramatic) is in a couple of weeks, so maybe it'll come down to how brave I feel on the day! I do need to lose some length as the ends are a bit dry. If I feel down my hair it's all soft soft soft then about an inch from the ends - dry. My main concern is what to say to stylist/hairdresser.

Also, Susiesuze, I love the colour of your hair!

If you search, you may find the answer to your questions. Here's a thread on the bolded What Should I Tell My Stylist?

Thanks for the link, Kathymack.

It's come around quickly... tomorrow is the day! I'm 95% decided on short, it's just how short. But I've had time to think. Glad I didn't rush into it spontaneously! Now I just have to stay calm... lol

I had a graduated bob which was to my chin in front and not super short in the back, and I could put it back with a banana clip or pin it with bobby pins in various ways. It's fun to play with! when it grew out a little more, I could fake a french twist.

Thanks, 83croissant, I guess you don't have to use a band to put hair up! I definatley can't use a band now lol.

I did it and it's really short...! The stylist suggested we could try shortish and see how I feel. So went to collarbone and mid neck at the back. But then I got brave and went even shorter. Bit weird atm but will get used to it. In the moment I just decided to try something really different! It's very graduated and VERY short in the back, then the front comes down to about chin length. Stylist straightened it in the salon too to see what it looked like back to curly again now) and I like it both ways. I did agree to the straightening btw!

I was a bit shocked when I saw the back but it fits with the whole style. They shaved into it with clippers (with guards on obviously!) That's when I got nervous... but it has created a really sleek finish and blends nicely. It feels very different but I'm glad I did it and can see how it's gonna be lower maintenance. I hated the hair at the nape too - nice not to have to deal with it (always went frizzy!) So yeah, about 70% of my hair is no longer! I will grow it out at some stage but for now I am short hair convert : D
