Default Coarse hair to fine-can it change?

I used to have much thicker, coarser hair. I have recently switched to CG and so far it has gotten much better, but it definitely seems like my hair (2b) has gone from being very coarse and thick to fine and thinner. Is it possible for your hair to change textures naturally or does it usually mean something is wrong? Can you bring back your original texture with the CG method?

I know it's possible to have different texture hair at different places of your head, but I don't believe that texture can change that drastically, especially simply from CG. My guess would be maybe the density of hair (the number of strands on your head) has changed? The reason I think that might be the cause or at least part of it is because I originally thought my hair was medium texture since it didn't get weighed down easily and seemed to fit that more than descriptions of coarse or fine hair, but after sending off for a hair analysis, I found out I have fine hair, and just a lot of it.

If your hair indeed has changed texture, I'm thinking it could be due to hormones or something in your body. Sorry I can't offer more help; hopefully someone else will have better suggestions.

I'm going to second everything that kimmidawn said and just add one more thing, because I remember this coming up a few months ago. Sometimes hair that is finer in texture can have some kinking to it, which has been known to make some people believe that their hair was more coarse than it actually is, especially if you're determining texture based on whether or not us can feel the individual strands. I've also noticed that certain products (generally non-CG) will make my hair feel more textured than it actually is.

I think hair can go from thick to thin with hair loss but not from coarse to fine. Unless "maybe" if someone went through chemo.

Many curlies with really dry hair think it's coarse. Once it gets properly moisturized, it looks and feels finer/softer.

Exactly what she said. Thats what I thought too, but my hair is actually quite fine.

This. And I've seen hair change with age as well.

Actually I've been wondering this lately. I'm really new to CG... I've been stalking the boards for a few months but recently started posting. I started CG mid-Jan and I feel like my hair is getting finer. It make sense that if it's more moisturized it can feel finer. It may also be because I'm paying more attention to it I'm realizing its true properties; I think it's genrally finer than I originally thought. But I have been a little worried. So far I'm liking CG... I definitely hope I'm not ruining my hair somehow.

The funny thing is... my boyfriend started cowashing within the last two weeks or so (I think mostly as a joke because I've been loosely explaining the stuff I'm finding out through this board haha) but now his hair feels softer and "finer" also. He has coarse, Asian hair, with a slight wave maybe 2a. Maybe it's just a perception? I hope...

Would it be possible that I'm overconditioning and if/every time it happens the strands stretch out and get finer?

(I'm still trying to properly figure out my properties but I'd say I'm medium-fine textured, medium density and high porosity... though since I've started CG my hair is starting to take FOREVER (like 7-8 hours) to dry... and today I saw beads of water roll off when getting in the shower so maybe it's not as porous anymore. Oh and I'm 2a/2b... depending on the day.)

Also I wanted to add that my hair doesn't feel less dense per se unlike the OP, just the strands themselves feel/seem finer. Also since I've started CG it's more tangly... which makes me think it's become more fine... ?

Hmm, Pom Curl, what about the finer texture is disturbing you? Is it going limp? Then you are probably over moisturized. I think that is easy enough to fix with some protein.

To the general topic, I have noticed the same thing that my hair appears finer now that I am CG – I think for me it is my high porosity. Before CG, my hair was either dry or swollen with humidity, so it looked coarser. But now, my strands are more stable, so they don’t look or feel as thick. There is a big difference in how my hair looks and feels based on if I am properly sealed or not.

Hey there! I guess what is disturbing me is that I might be damaging my hair somehow. I don't generally get OCd but it has happened, and I'm wondering if that instance stretched out my strands and made them finer. Or if that's happening generally since my hair is more moisturized, like it's getting more elastic bc of the moisture and stretching out more bc of its own weight and hence becoming finer. But again maybe it's just my imagination/ I'm being paranoid. I am including proteins pretty regularly (hydrolized wheat). Like I said I'm not generally OC'd (my hair's not limp nor mushy), but the moisture level in my hair has definitely increased since starting CG.

I guess another question is if I OC, can it simply be repaired w/ proteins and/or a clarifying wash... or could that do irreparable damage?

Thanks for any help for a newbie!

+1. I thought my hair was coarse when I started out, but it's fine.

My hair texture has definitely changed over the last five years or so (I *think* it has, anyway). It has gotten finer and less curly, but very, very gradually. I think this gradual change also caused me to think I had coarse hair up until recently, even though I did not. I'm assuming this is from hormonal changes as I graduated from the "puberty" time period.
Also, LOL at the boyfriend cowashing! Mine just started to use my low poo because I was blabbing about SLS etc.

I've been wondering the same thing. All of my life each individual hair strand has been very coarse. It was literally thick enough to sew with. I have only been following cg since December but I'm noticing a drastic change in texture lately and have been wondering if it's getting thinner as I'm getting older or if it's because it's healthier. I honestly can't say that I've examined my hair without any type of product prior to going cg however and the texture of my hair could possibly have been due to being damaged and or product.

I am not an expert but I have never read that being OC can permanently damage your hair (like over doing it with protein). If you are not limp or mushy, I wouldn't think you have anything to worry about and your moisture/protein balance is okay.

For me, I love that my hair looks finer since I have so much of it. There is less bulk to deal with.

I too have noticed some thinner strands, but my coarse/medium thick strands still are the majority. But I've also noticed some strands change, half is thick and half is thin/ and lighter in color. Anyone else notice that?
