GVP Conditioning Balm- not impressed

Does anyone else NOT like GVP conditioning balm? It is SO thick and I am finding it does not make for easy detangling. AT ALL. I tried it because so many people rave about it, but it's not doing much for me right now. I have spent so much money on my hair in the last few months and this wasn't exactly cheap. Has anybody else used this and switched to something else they liked better?

mcheryce 08-21-2012 09:34 AM

I thought the same thing. So i mixed mine with gel and oil and made a curly pudding out of it.

lcl0706 08-21-2012 10:29 AM

I don't love it, and I have the Matrix/Biolage version, not the generic  so it definitely wasn't cheap. Okay, I can't say I don't like it, but I don't think it does what everyone else here raves that it does. It gives me no slip, and it's very very thick. If I ever need a DT, which is rare, I prefer CJCR over GVPCB. I used GVPCB more in the beginning of CG when I needed more moisture than I do now. If I use GVPCB, it's on an exceptionally dry day and I have to rinse it out immediately or it's way too moisturizing for me. But it smells great!

I also find that GVP CB doesn't have enough slip for my liking, but it is definitely moisturizing. I used the Biolage Conditioning Balm way, way pre-CG and loved it as a conditioner (and did find that it had enough slip for detangling). I know it's been reformulated at least twice in the interim, so I don't know how the current formula compares. And I don't know how the current formula compares to the GVP version (I read in another thread that the GVP version does not reflect the most recent Biolage re-formulation).

I end up combining this with a conditioner that has more slip but not necessarily as much moisture for a nice balance (for my protein-hungry hair, Mill Creek Botanicals Keratin Conditioner fits the bill perfectly).

I like it for conditioner only styling but I find Vo5 moisture milks more moisturizing for me and it has good slip my fav for slip is the balsam and protein conditioner from the dollar tree but it does nothing for moisture

3A/B mix with flat roots dark blonde (refusing to call it brunette I miss my blonde baby hair) lovin my curls

I use about a teaspoon of the GVP as a LI. I can't detangle with it at ALL, but it does help to keep my hair moisturized if I use if after I've CO washed and detangled.

It's not great for detangling. I detangle with Tresemme Naturals, then use the GVPCB as a RO/LI.

jazzy curlz 08-21-2012 08:25 PM

I finds that GVP definitely works well as a LI/DT. I love that its thick so I have occasionally used it as my LI and it defines my curls nicely.

I haven't come across any conditioners that detangle as well as the Cone conditioners that I no longer use. I do t know if anyone else noticing the more organic cg conditioners moisturizing well but not detangling like a cone would. I don't worry about trying to detangle all the way in the shower any more because with cg I need to just detangle from the ends up with conditioner and not let My hair tangle too much to begin with. I've tried renpure and it was buildupy so won't buy, GVP moisturizes well and is on my list still. It also works well as a leave in.Tresseme naturals moisture IMO detangled the best and its good as a leave in or cowash.

GVP is one of LI for me. It has no slip no matter what. I use Tresseme Naturals as Detangler/RO.

hairhealth 08-23-2012 12:32 PM

what a timely thread. i was just thinking about re-adding gvpcb to my arsenal. i will just stay on my modified cg with the same products. 'looks like my product junkie days are officially over. :blob8:

dftkarin 08-25-2012 10:04 AM

I use it as a RO sometimes and as a LI almost every day - and it works very well for me in that role. I like that its not drippy when I use it as a LI - and I guess I need that level of moisture these days.

I have it also and dont love it. I like the smell, but I find it does not work as well as, say, Cure Care, which I do love, or Yes to Tomatoes, which I also love, including the smell. The GVP packaging is an issue for me; I can hardly get it out of the bottle. But regarding its performance, I dont think it is great. I dont.

curlangel0690 08-26-2012 09:46 PM

I have found that I get more slip from GVP when I dilute it. I make sure my hair is super wet and mix with a little water in my hands.

@myrna I'm so glad you mentioned getting it out of the bottle. I hate having to fight with bottles in the shower!
I thought I was crazy for not liking it because so many people rave about it. It's making for some fabulous shaving cream right now☺

BrittneyBuddy 08-27-2012 03:35 PM

I find it to be just an okay conditioner. First of all, I HATE the bottle it comes in. I find it really difficult to squeeze out the product, especially when the bottle is less than half way full (maybe that's the actual thickness of the product itself though). What I REALLY hate is how the letters on the bottle flake off when they get wet, which is hard to avoid since you use conditioner in the shower (duh). They flake off onto my hand and are hard to get off, so they end up getting in my hair. Not attractive.

The actual product itself is okay. It's a bit too rich for my hair and doesn't detangle my hair at all. It weighs down my hair but moisturizes really well. For me it works better as a DT than a RO or a LI. If you want a bit more weight to your hair this might work though, but I definitely don't recommend it for detangling!

Does anyone like the GVP "Conditioner" (the Paul Mitchell knock off) better than this as a leave-in?

I have a good coupon for Sally's so I'm trying to decide if I want to try that or get another Conditioning Balm (which I've only used once so far so idk how I like it yet).

Pheebie 08-27-2012 08:50 PM

I'm glad I'm not alone - GVP CB is very hit-or-miss for me. One day I'll use it as RO & LI and get amazing results. Then I'll try it again, either the next day or a few days later, and my hair is dull, lifeless & with poor curl formation.
I get much better results all around (detangling, as a rinse out & leave-in) with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration. (I know it's got a 'cone, but I don't mind - the results are consistent and I love the scent.)

Jacksgirl04 10-09-2012 03:27 PM

I was all excited to try this only to be let down. It smelled pretty decent, had amazing slip in the shower but after styling and air-drying it left my curls limp. My curls are now waves. Don't like this stuff at all, I will be returning the product.

Wiggilyhair 10-09-2012 05:46 PM

The Biolage version now has salicylic acid in it which made me question trying it. I do remember using the GVP a few years ago and not liking it at all compared to Biloage.
