I started CG 4 weeks ago. We're right in the middle of monsoon season, so it's been super humid all of this time, with a fairly high dew point. Plus, where I work, swamp cooling is used, making the air really moist. I've tried scrunching conditioner or oil in to my hair, but it seems like large amounts of gel is what does the best job at controlling the frizzies. I don't mind a little halo, just as long as overall my hair looks neat and healthy. I really like the clumpy looking curls, but mostly I just want frizz control.

Since I haven't had a lot of time or money to go out and buy different gels to try, and since DC products are so expensive, I decided to I make my own gel.

I made flax seed gel, and I think it works pretty good until I've been in moist air for a length of time. It just doesn't seem to hold up to humidity. My batch was really liquidy, though. Maybe a new batch with a more gelatenous texture would work better. Either that, or I just need more.

I wondered if maybe a gelatin based gel would provide a better hold, and resist humidity a little better. However, after reading more about it, I now I wonder if it would be too much protein. I'm just not sure what to do.

I was hoping to hear feedback from people who have used gelatin or FSG, or really anyone who has a good gel they can recommend that's sold in stores locally (such as Walgreens, CVS, Ulta, Sally's, Walmart, etc.).
My hair: TBD, but appears to be 2B/2C, medium density, medium porosity with higher porosity on chemically treated ends, medium width.

Permed 1 year ago, should be mostly grown out and cut off. I'm not sure how much of these curls are my own.

Current products being used: DC No poo, DC conditioner, DC gel, FSG
FSG is not known for providing hold. If you need hold, try Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee or Aussie Instant Freeze.

medium texture, normal porosity, normal elasticity
hair likes protein, doesn't like oils, easily OC'd

low poo: JCHCC, CJGCS
RO/co-wash/LI: YTCarrots, DB Pumpkin Seed
stylers: a bunch of stylers that are all pretty much the same (KCCC, UFDCM, CRCM, CKCJ) or ArcAngel if I need more hold
DT/PT: CJRM, CNPF
I second what elizard said. I use FSG as my styler, but never without a hard hold gel over it. Aussie Instant Freeze is my favorite. When I want a lighter hold gel, I use either LA Looks, or Ecostyler, for hard-medium hold, or Sally's Bioterra gel, for a medium hold.

I don't put gelatin in my FSG at all, so I can't help advise with that. But when I want to thicken my FSG, I just boil it longer. My gel is not runny, it's the thickness of beaten egg whites. Not really thick, but it adheres well when I scrunch it into soaking wet hair. I get good clumps.

Some say to add honey to your FSG to help with hold.
Hmmm... thanks! I was thinking about style and hold as one in the same..... In my previous life, I'd have used gel or some other product for style and then I'd use hairspray for hold. Basically, in my mind, you have a multitude of style products (mousse, gel, creams....) but hairspray always= hold. That was a long time ago, though. I've barely used hair spray in over a year.

When it comes to curly hair, it seems like it would be easier to have one product for both style and hold. Can anyone expand more on style vs hold? Unless style product maybe it helps to reduce the amount of hold product needed? So for example, I could drown my locks in FSG for style so I'd need less of the expensive DC gel (or other gel product) for hold?

Honey, huh? I can't imagine adding something sticky, but it's certainly worth a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the product recommendation, elizard, and thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Styling is getting your hair where you want it to be, hold is keeping it there.

Since coming on nc.com and learning how to use products and technique, my curl pattern has strengthened and I don't need to use a product especially for hold. It's a good thing, as my hair doesn't care for the chemicals in gels (especially polyquats.)

I have to second what Kathymack says about hold and syle. She summed it up perfectly.

I personally have not used hairspray in about 5 years, at least. I can't stand it. I don't like how it makes my hair stiff and have no movement at all.
What I like about gel is that I get hold, and still have movement and great curl. FSG gives me great curl, but I feel like the style doesn't hold up all day. Gel alone doesn't give me enough definition. Together they work well for me.
I don't consider the gel over the FSG an "expensive" gel. Aussie Instant Freeze is about $3.00 a tube. I have found Ecostyler at the 99 Cent Store. The most expensive gel in my rotation is Sally's Bioterra, it's around $7 for a 16oz bottle. I don't use it over FSG though, I use it over mousse, and I never use alot because mousse has hold of its own.
Overall, I think my routine is pretty inexpensive. I spend less than $10 a month on haircare products.

I also do put honey in my FSG but not for hold. Honey is a humectant. I believe it does help with hold, though, I just don't personally believe it gives alot of hold - not like a gel would. It's a nice additive for me though, my hair likes humectants. It's not sticky when you add it to FSG; the heat of the gel dissolves it.

Not sure what type of hair you have, but I'll tell you what works for me, and perhaps it'll be food for thought.

I use FSG only for a curl enhancer/clumper. I have to use a heavier gel over that!

I have found LAL power spikes to work well, plus it's cheap in comes in that huge bottle. BRHG is another go-to.

I've found doing regular PT's is a must, but so are regular DT's! Plus protein in
general - my hair loves it, and it helps with frizzies.

I can't get too much LI on very wet hair.

I need to seal with oil before applying stylers. Mineral oil has been a GOD SEND for me, especially in high humidity! (there's a thread about it you may want to check out)

I do sometimes use hairspray, but I havent found it drying or stiff. I use GF flexible hold humidity spray (or something like that) sometimes, and my hair does not feel "hairsprayed", and it seems to help with hold and humidity issues.

So maybe some of that will be of help to you? Good luck!!
