I think that the word is insulting to whomever it is applied to. While it is viewed as more as an description to black hair, I find that it is insult when other words (ie: course, tangled, kinky just to name a few) could easily be used in it's place. So to the original poster- I would choose other words to describe your hair. I'm sure if you consider yourself to be Hispanic, there are words within and outside your community that your ethnic group would deem offensive and/or insulting. It's the same thing.

Today the term nappy is used rather loosely. I've even overheard people with hair in the 1's and 2's refer to their hair as nappy. I guess in that respect it would mean difficult to manage. Other times people use it in a positive sense to emphasize the fact that they are proud of their tightly coiled/highly textured hair.

But, long story short: WHO CARES! As long as you like your hair what others say shouldn't matter. I'm sure you have beautiful hair. Carry on...
Actually there is an official definition for "nappy" but people being people have taken the term and turned it into something usually meant to be mean spirited.

Dictionary - Definition of nappy
