The knottiest hair EVER!

This all seems related, before I know it, some product or other is causing my hair to feel brittle - maybe it was too many uses of the Ouidad that I thought I loved (until my hair started to feel like I'd poured alcohol on it!)

Then maybe it was all the conditioning treatements I used to counter that (and not enough protein).

And then the tangles OMG - my hair has never been hair you can simply finger comb, so I have to use a wide-tooth comb, but this is HIDEOUS how tangled my hair is.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN??? Is the dryness related to the tangles? Are the tangles related to something else?

Then I always get the feeling that nothing gives me enough slip - like there will be times when CJ Daily Fix will give me great slip and other times where it feels like sandpaper.

WHY?

So I did a protein treatment today and my hair instantly felt softer, but the tangles were so out of control-

Then what happens is that my hair falls out!
I don't know if it's falling out b/c of all the tangles or something else (nutrition, etc) it's really hard to say.

But my hair is noticeably thinner.

Oh, and the last thing is that the tangles then cause TONS of single-strand knots. So even though I recently got a trim, my ends feel terrible b/c of all the little knots.

What is this cycle? Anyone else go through this?

Help!

At first, reading your post, I thought maybe you had used too much protein, but then you said a protein treatment made your hair feel better, so I don't know. I recommend you use a deep conditioner and see how your hair reacts to it. Then, I suggest you check all your other products for protein, and cut back on any with protein for a week or two and see how that works for you.

Fine hair usually does well with protein, but you might have gotten too much of a good thing, or maybe a wrong protein type for you.
Be Happy!

Type:2b/3ab?
Texture:Medium/fine
Porosity:Normal
Elasticity:Normal

Experimenting with too many products to name here. All this great info keeps my head spinning.
Thanks, Raindear, I'm thinking the opposite - I think I used Ouidad and got dry, then reacted by doing deep conditioning and got overconditioned - as far as I know I haven't been using a lot of protein

But then I did a protein treatment today and used protein as a LI and my hair is soft and normal again!

So I wonder if I went OC - and if that led to the millions of tangles, knotty ends, combing fallout.

Not sure - will wait for others to respond to to see if this cycle may happen to them or if they can relate to these tangles and what to do!

I'm on my phone, so if you have your hair properties in your signature I can't see them. One of the benefits of protein is that it helps to fill in some of the porous spots in hair. Hair that is higher in porosity (often, but not always, due to damage from coloring and/or heat styling) can tend to tangle much more because the cuticles are basically rubbing up against each other. So for higher porosity hair, protein will reduce tangles by filling in and therefore smoothing out the hair strands.
Many of the Ouidad products are not CG-friendly, meaning that they contain sulfates and/or silicones. Excessive use of these ingredients can definitely cause hair to dry out (and higher porosity hair does lose moisture more quickly). I'm modified CG and do incorporate sulfates and silicones into my hair routine on occasion. What I've found (through lots of trial and error) is that my hair does better with silicone styling products than it does with silicone shampoo or conditioner. I suspect it's because I'm ensuring that my hair is very well moisturized before I apply that silicone barrier to my hair. It sounds like your hair needs some TLC right now, in the form of both protein and moisture, but being picky about the types of each that you are using. I would absolutely take the time to search out silicone-free treatments so that your hair is able to get maximum benefit.

Any other suggestions for how to get my hair on track? Wah. It looks awful and was BEAUTIFUL only a month ago!

The other thought I had was to try sealing. I do intense martial arts training several days a week and the hair at the nape of my neck has a tendency to tangle horribly. I've found that sealing after my LI has significantly reduced this.

Also, Kinky Curly Knot today is amazing for me for dealing with tangles. I've also heard amazing things about Curly Hair Solutions Slip Detangler.

What is sealing?

By the way, I just went to my chiropractor and he doesn't think it's vitamins or thyroid. He thinks it's falling out b/c of a wheat ingredient in one of my products.

Has anyone heard of this or know how I can detect wheat in my products?

As far as the wheat, I have heard of people who are sensitive to this ingredient, especially people with celiac disease, although I've normally heard that wheat sensitivities are identified because the scalp actually feels itchy and irritated. I've generally seen it listed as "hydrolyzed wheat protein," but you might also want to be on the lookout for ingredients that include the word "hops." There are plenty of other proteins out there, so you can still get protein for your hair. But it can be a common ingredient in lots of different products (I think it's in almost every Deva product and might even be in Daily Fix, but you would need to double check that)

Oh, that's helpful. Thank you! I'm gluten intolerant, so maybe this theory makes sense. Have you heard of hair loss in others with this problem? Maybe I'll write a separate post. I'm also going to talk to Martha from CJ about her products - thanks!

So what are some recommendations for oils for fine hair?

So I had started using Ouidad gel last month and then added Ouidad LI - OMG - the gel has wheat in it!

And I think that's what started this whole mess. Literally my hair LOVED what was going on before that (of course, I forget now) but my hair was looking gorgeous; I can't believe what down turn it's taken! I really need to find out what other prodoucts have wheat - I found a few of mine that have Oat protein, but not sure if that's related.

I wonder if there's a list somewhere of wheat and wheat-derivative free CG products. Or even a list of what ingredients to look out for. This is definitely all starting to make sense!

So I think silk-amino acids and panthenol are okay but keratin, yeast, and wheat are not - and probably not oats either (not sure about soy).

I separated out all my products with wheat and so far it's MOST!

The ones with it toward the top of the ingredient list are definitely problematic. So glad I'm finally solving this!!

Now I have to find all new products after taking YEARS to find these (I think the wheat thing is tricky b/c at first the product will seem fine then overtime, I get super tangly hair, falls out through combing, dryness, etc.)

I had a sample of Shea Moisture masque last night and just smoothed it over my poor hair and my hair literally softenend and detangled. I left it on over night and today I cowashed with a little smoothing lotion and NO TANGLES!!! total slip and I did a SheaMoisture leave in with another sample I had and some BRHG over that (which has no wheat and is a go to for me) and my hair IS BACK! Yay! Much thinner but soft, bouncy, shiny!

So I think this is going to be another bit of trial and error and I do know I need protein but Komaza has no wheat, nor does this SheaMoisture - so I'm going to go pick some up at target today (shampoo and all) and see how that works.
