New DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel?
Has anyone tried this yet, and what did you think? Saw it mentioned on the Wavy Hair fb community, so wanted options. How does it compare to Arc Angel or other ultra hold gels? Discuss.

I believe its the same gel, just renamed. Someone else on here said that it was. I don't use Deva products, so I am not sure, just repeating what I read on here

The ladies on the Wavy Hair Community forum seem to think the UDF has more hold. Also the AA has castor oil I believe, while the UDF does not. Was just curious if anyone on here had used it yet & what their experiences were :-)
Thanks!
Jenn

Auntie and Curly, I heard that the new gel was actually the Devacurl AnGel, renamed. Maybe a Deva stylist can help up out?? I have to say, I detest when companies do this, just re-package a formula, and try to sell it to us under a different name - not saying Deva did this, that is the question, but Pantene seems to do it all the time. Same ingredients, differently named products.

It is a new gel. AnGell was renamed as Light Defining Gel, ArcAngel had no name change and Ultra Defining Gel was introduced. I'm trying to wait until I can get it on the ground, but with so many positive reviews on FB I might have to cave and order it online.

Does anyone know what the ingredients are like? I'm wondering if it has protein or glycerin.

Hmmm, interesting. I have to say that personally, I do not like Deva's products and cannot agree with their marketing/pricing. However - I like their cutting and styling methods and techniques. So I am on the fence about them as an organization.
Anyway... Devachan just opened a salon here in southern CA and I actually have an appt. this Friday. After all the drama I've gone through with other salons, I bit the bullet and made the appt. at Devachan. They aren't any more expensive than the "Deva-trained" stylist I had gone to, and in fact are actually cheaper. Just farther to drive (but a nicer area of Los Angeles, so there's the trade off).
All this to say, I won't buy their products on principle, it's ridiulous to me to pay their prices for the sizes you get, but I'm not above trying them out when I'm in the salon, and letting you all know what I think. I was hoping to try the new Deva styling foam. But I could try the new gel instead, I'll have to think about it. I'd like to try the shine serum too, as an alternative to CIAB.
I love CIAB, and here's the thing with CIAB - same price (maybe even a bit cheaper), and twice the size. CIAB lasts me 6 months. That's what I mean by not buying their products on principle.

Ok, so I tried this gel today at the Devachan salon, and I'll tell you what I thought
I liked it ok, didn't love it. I won't buy it because I have other gels I like more, but it's ok. In my opinion, there is too much protein in it - that is 3 that I counted on that ingredient list: soy, wheat, and oat, for sure, and then it has hops, which I'm not sure about. Too much for me to use as a daily gel. I also feel it has less hold than ArcAngell, which has more hold than Angell. So as far as hold goes, to me it's between the two. Glycerin does not bother me, so I didn't mind that, and it is a nice, soft gel when you SOTC. It does give nice shine. THe problem I had with this is the same I have with all Deva products, the styling effect does not last all day, and I certainly can't get 2nd day hair. By the time I sit down to write this - 8 hours after leaving the salon, my hair is an undefined mass of poof. That happens to me with products not established in my routine, and esp. products heavy in protein. But I like to get 2nd day hair, so if I can't go to bed with curls that are still defined enough to put in a sleep cap knowing I'll be able to redo in the morning, then the product isn't worth spending $ on for me.
HOWEVER... for those of you who like ArcAngell, you might want to stock up. The stylist at Devachan told me they would be discontinuing that. She didn't say when. But if that's your HG, be forwarned. It appears that it's going to go bye bye.
No sweat for me, it's not a gel I use (too much protein) but I know alot of people like it.
By the way, don't mean to say that my experience at Devachan was bad. It wasn't, I had a great experience, loved getting my hair done, and for most of the day my hair looked great. Definitely going back when I need a touch up. When I can afford it, I'd love to get my hair colored there as well. A first class salon with great staff.

The only Deva product I love is the styling foam. And, I cannot use it alone; I use it with Biotera gel.
FYI, Auntie, I have found that there are Deva stylists in my area who are familiar with the Deva cut and method, but because they do not work in a Deva salon, they are far less expensive.

Myrna, I was curious about the foam, and mentioned it to the stylist. She told me it was wrong for my hair type - because I don't have fine hair.
I thought, hmmm. But didn't push it. Mousse certainly works for me as a styler, but I let her do what she felt was best. She did put some of the deva foam just at my roots to give it more volume. I didn't see much difference, to be honest, but whatever My Herbal Essence mousse works just as well. I use that with Biotera gel too.
The Deva trained stylists in my area work out of their own salons too, but I have had nothing but problems with them. That's why I finally decided that it was worth going to the real thing. I'm happy with the experience, and it wasn't that expensive, comparatively speaking. About $30 more than the local lady, and about 5x better, at least. Yay!!

Auntie, I dont have fine hair! I do not. But I still like the styling foam. What I think is this: stylists have been taught that mousse is for fine haired gals. Mousse has always worked better for me. But I use it with some gel. Its too bad the foam is so pricey, and there is no trial size, so its not like a mousse that is a buck fifty in your local Walgreens. I like that a little goes a long way.
I am trying a stylist who does not work at a Deva salon, because, as you all know, I tried the fancy salon and had nothing but problems. I have not had a real hair cut in months. about a month ago, my husband and I were out to dinner, and there was a gal here with great curls (not curls like mine, but great curls, hers were more defined, and she is blond, so the texture of her curls are different.) I asked her who cut her hair, and she wound up texting me the name of the stylist and the salon, which is pretty close to where I live. So, if I am dissatisfied with the current stylist, I have a back up. I think the main issues for me is finding a stylist who lets me use my products, and who pays attention to what I know. I am getting my hair colored on Thursday, and I will be talking with her about the general shape of my style; I think it needs some tweaking.
I cant use products with glycerin. At least not in summer.
