Is manhattans water ruining my hair?
 

I moved to manhattan in may, and I just went home for the weekend. Home being Rockland county. I realized my hair looks great after I wash it at home, but horrible when I wash it in manhattan. I thought it was the blow dryer I used so I took it to the city with me and my hair still is frizzy and weighed down. I use all the same products in both places, same methods, amounts and everything, yet in manhattan I get no volume and frizz all over. Could it be the water??? I'm freaking out! How do I combat this?!

doesn't manhattan's water system come from westchester, or?? not manhattan. however, maybe it picks up minerals in the pipes in your apartment bldg??
if it is, then maybe you need to low poo more often. i'd also use something like cj daily fix to cowash as it has an ingredient that helps to remove minerals.

Someone in the "hair business," who used to live in Brooklyn told me that the water in NYC is "soft" water--no minerals. I don't know if it's "softened" water. Our vacation home has a water softener, my hair prefers the water at "home," which is moderately hard--a 3 of 4 when I set up the espresso machine. Maybe it's just what one is used to that's the issue??

you know, that is what i was thinking instinctively because when i've been places that have soft water, my hair is not good. it's almost as tho it needs some minerals to give it 'backbone.' LOL

when i stayed a week in ny last year. statan island. the water was all sulfery and white. lots of sulfer. my hair was soo dry that week. its deff ny water. suuucks

I think it's the salts that you put in the water softener that my hair doesn't like.

NYC has pretty much the "cleanest" water in the nation, as far as drinking quality goes - very few mineral deposits, etc. Great for hydrating your body, but it means the water may be softer than you've been used to living elsewhere.
