Would people object to paying a few pence / cents to join...

to try and stop these stupid spammers? Just as idea... I know i would rather pay like 50p (what is that in USD... a dollar?) as a one-off registration fee than see all these offensive posts.
I would be happy to pay a fee in order to have a spam-free site! I sometimes think twice about popping on to this site to check the latest posts, because I think to myself, "What offensive posts am I going to come across if I do?"

Most of the time I am only on here for 10-15 minutes, and in that time I usually come across at least one offensive post. And some of these posts sit on the board undeleted for days, or weeks, or longer it seems. I have wondered if there is someone here who daily scans the recent posts? I would gladly do the job if someone wants to give me the power!
I agree, considering that we have young teens that use the site too.

But then again, too few to mention...
Hey I'm in for a fee as long as we can keep it affordable.
I think probably today is the worst I've seen it in a while. Poor monitors take a day off and they all bombard the place

i am not sure if fees are necessary. i suggested to the moderators that we institute a policy of having all new members be moderated for the first few posts till we see they are ok. that is what i do with my yahoogroups and we have NO SPAM. drivel maybe but no spam
perhaps we can also volunteer to be spam reporters and just send them to M&G so they can delete their memberships.

Hi, new here, but it's one of the first things I noticed. What will stop them is requiring they submit a valid email addy, and then must verify their membership through the email before they can post.

I don't think a fee would be a good idea though.

OMG, LOOK!!

...It's a siggie.
I don't think a fee would change anything. If G&M could stop the spammers, they would (and the blasted spammers just keep coming up with new ways to get posts on). If you're saying spammers wouldn't pay, I can see that. But it penalizes everyone else.

Maybe an email verification process before they can post could work since spammers don't like manual processes.

Yeah I think they need that thing where you have to type the weird letters and numbers in and moderating but I'm not sure there are mods with that kind of time?

Why the heck are they coming here, anyway?? This site is not exactly full of people who would go to the links.

I would definitely pay now. But when I was new, I would not have paid to join.
I would not pay.

Why?

I don't have a credit card and I can't borrow someone else's.
3C/4A and too long to handle (and afford!)
I agree that new members should be moderated, or at least have some crypto-fill in to screen out the automated bots. I think doing anything like that will weed out most, if not all of the spammers. And does anyone else notice that we've been flooded with spam all of a sudden? I mean, I haven't been a member here for years or anything, but there's been a considerable increase in spam since I've joined. Not enough to keep me off the boards, though, as I just ignore their posts
3B Corkscrew... I'm back on the boards now! Just got The Big Chop on Monday, pics coming soon.
I agree that many of us would probably pay now but the idea of having to pay when you sign up, when you've no notion of how well this site will help you or your curls, would be very offputting.

When I first joined about 9 months back the site was spam free pretty much> i wonder why there's been a sudden influx? it's like with junk mail too - some days I get none and then i go through a two week phase of getting LOADS all from the same type of spammers.

it might be quite technical but maybe it's to do with the bot's getting hold of the website code (i dont know technicalities but i'm sure there's something like that) or the i.p. address and using that. is there a way to block that, to at least limit the spam?

it must be such a lot of work for the mods!

cleanse: OS shampoo. PureNuffStuff cleanser.

style: B2Basics GreenTeaGel. T&G Curl Balm. JCarter Nourish&Shine.

as for the recent popularity of spam it might have something to do with the web site being mentioned in the new york times recently: more recognition from everybody including the spammers.
but as much as it would seem odd that they would post on this board the amount of views received for these kinds of posts is never 0.
I am a 3c reformed product junkie thanks to the economy.

I lurk a lot, I change my hair color a lot. It's currently black and bsl when wet and beyond my shoulders still when dry.

Now I will stop procrastinating and get back to what I was supposed to be doing before I got on here.

Any questions?
