Completely damaged! even cried!

So I had achieved awsome curls in the past few months after being cg for a while! This weekend I went to change my haircolor....went all wrong! Afterwards I haddd to bleach my hair to take out the horrendous color that came out! It took two more dyes to fix my hair! :'( needless to say I burned the hell out of my hair with a bleaching and 3 dyes! When it was all said and done, I am with crispy burned hair an NO curls! I cried while looking in front of the mirror at my hair where I just had gorgeous curls two days before! I did a strong protein and deep condition treatments but didn't do a thing! Don't know where to go from here! Any recs on wut I can do to help....I know its going to take a while to bring my hair back but I will continue to try and I'm sure cry some more :sad7:

I am also straightening my hair bc w/out it looks HORRIBLE! Ill give it a week and then ill do some more treatments and then maybe I won't have to straighten it as much!!!

Please help me be me again! (With my curly hair) :( I WILL NEVER EVEN LOOK AT BLEACH AGAIN!!!!!!! :angryfire:

I'm not sure but what i can say is to NOT straighten it, that's just gonna fry and damage the little bit of curl that's left. Try braids, and protective styles, updos, buns. And continue to deep condition and do protein treatments. ACV brings back some curl, you could do ACV rinses before you get out the shower. You're gonna have to seriously seriously seriously baby your hair.

Good idea, its just hard to do updos, because my hair is soo short still. Just shoulder length! Ill try something tomorrow to see if I can do some kind of braid but its hard too bc it has to look neat and nice bc I'm a receptionist. I know its bad to straighten but I had some events over the weekend too and couldn't go with fried horrible looking hair..... :crybaby:

I would highly recommend avoiding the flat ironing like the plague. It's just gonna compound the dye/bleach damage. Being extra gentle, and doing more PT/DT's will help, maybe not immediately but over time.
I know it doesn't help now, but for future reference never EVER bleach out a bad dye job. There's a product called Vanish, I blogged about it, and it's awesome for removing color. It doesn't damage, it shrinks the dye molecule and you just shampoo the crap out of your hair to remove the dye. It dries your hair out to shampoo it so much, but it's easily remedied with DT's.
Good luck!

Same thing happened to me and I cut all my hair off into a pixie.

Protein protein protein! Baby it and it will heal over time.

Can u cover the bleach with a dark semi permanent? That will smooth it out a bit.

Can you curl your hair on rollers instead of straightening it while you recondition and try to recover from this setback? That will be more gentle than straightening, at least.

I'm so sorry! I can't imagine how frustrated you are!

Treat it well and maybe it will come back.

Korkscrew 09-18-2012 01:58 AM

Sorry this happened. Others are right: TLC and the passing of time will do wonders.

Many years ago I succeeded in bleaching my brown hair platinum blond. But at a cost. It felt like straw and it lost most of its curl (reminds me of your experience). Soon after I got the "genius" idea to try and dye it brown again, on a whim. Only it turned out the color of the following smiley ... Wait for it ... :toothy7:

Yeah. Just awful.

Please remember that this is just one bad hair moment in your (likely) long life. If your hair doesn't recover, it will grow back. Or it could still recover. Either way, like you said, you learned a lesson about bleach and won't repeat the mistake.

If suggest getting a stylish, funky cut and starting over. Damaged hair is just that. Keeping dead hair on your head is no different than keeping a dead finger on your hand, IMO.

get some cute headbands to wear. and straightening will only kill off your curls/hair for sure.

I will give it some time before I cut my hair....I have been growing it out from a short bob for a looooong time and I'm only just past my shoulders still. My hair takes a very long time to grow at all! If I cut it again I'm going to be sooo depressed! And I definitely cannot go shorter than a chin length! That's what I get for being so stupid for sure lol.....I have to wash my hair tonight after a few days of being flat ironed....soooo nervous! I don't want to see it like that bc I know for sure ill cry again lol! But I will start tomorrow with updos and stuff to not damage it anymore (if that's even possible hehe) thanx guys!

Unfortunately you may have to let go of the length goal for a while. :/ It may take frequent trims for a while to help the problem.

PT's and DT's - several times a week - would be helpful! And I would probably go co-wash only, or low-poo if you must.

And maybe you could try sleeping in sponge rollers - not damaging, and you'll have curls!

And don't despair - I bet in a couple weeks you'll see some of it coming back in!

Hang in there!!!

If a deep conditioning didn't reverse what happened and you can't even take your fingers through your hair, that means that hair has been completely damaged with no nutrition whatsoever. There is nothing you can do to fix that. You will have to cut it. The longer u keep that dead hair on your head, the slower and longer you will wait for healthy hair to grow back. For what it's worth, I'm sorry.

there is a slight possibility that you have too much protein in your hair. that is usually the straw-like texture. so, try a dt with heat and see if that helps. make sure the dt does not have protein. if it does help, then i'd do as many dts with heat as you can over the next few days.
if it doesn't help, then i'm seconding the thought that you fried your hair. :-(

good luck!

Try Philip Kingsley Elasticizer. Put it in damp hair and cover with plastic cap. Leave on at least an hour before you shampoo. Really helps with dryness

success....

hi girls, just wanted to fill you in on my hair. Its been a few weeks now and after all the DT's and a PT, and braids/updos everyday :( my hair is on the road to recovery I've left it curly 3 days now and it looks good. Not great but its expected! Still dry but still workin on it....didn't have to chop it all off thank goodness!!! Thanx for the help everyone!

So glad to hear things are working out :) I sounds like you've got things under control now, but if you're still looking for a way to add some extra moisture, one of my favorite things to do is add oils to my conditioner/DT. EVOO is one of my favorites - easy to find (I usually have this on hand for cooking anyway) and makes my hair so soft.

wholelottalove 10-05-2012 02:05 PM

I've been there and unfortunately all you can do is wait do is wait for it to grow out. :( That being said, with good, moisturizing products, it WILL get better, but the curl won't come back, maybe a slight wave at best. I say go ahead with straightening but make sure you use a good heat protectant. The damage is done, focus on babying the regrowth.
