Omg the tangles!

Like Tree4Likes

Yeah, the plumber called it a "ponytail" it was MASSIVE!

I don't know why it's coming out in the shower - I guess you're right, it's not coming out during the day and I had been washing my hair every three days - so it would seem like a LOT - but even when I wash it every day it still seems like more than usual.

I did just lose about 12-15 pounds (pretty gradually though) - I don't know if that's why...

My hair also feels sooooo much thinner when I pull it up in something - volume has definitely decreased by a lot.

I hear our hair goes through stages where it sheds more... Maybe it's just that? And the loose hairs stuck in the tangles?

Idk... It's just a thought. Maybe some wishful/positive thinking.

Maybe if you get the tangles under control you'll be able to see if that was the issue.

Check what type proteins your present products contain. When/if you start using products with protein again, add one type at a time to see if any of the different proteins is a problem for you.

You might try some Suave Naturals conditioners (not the coconut while you are off protein). They have EDTA (a chelating agent) and may help rinse the hard water minerals out of your hair. Using distilled water for your final rinse may also help. A shower filter may also help.

Raindeer, thanks - sauve never had enough slip for me.

So I got no dry brittle straw today - I did a cowash with CJ Smoothing and it gave me TONS of slip (that's new) and knots came out easily and were few and I had mild fall out (a teeny bit more than my usual as of like a year ago) but much better than recently.

Yay!

Key seems to be tying it back at night, using a lot of oil overnight, no protein (no brhg) But I'm low on what products to use - I did a smoothing LI and then komaza coconut pudding over that (it's all I had and it's no protein) and a bit of KCCC on the back section that gets really dry and frizzy. We'll see (I never did this combo but at least it's all free-to-low PT)

BTW, I ordered some CCCC-lite. I don't even know why. I didn't realize it has dimethicone in it, and also quite a bit of protein - ugh. I guess I'll return it!

What oils would be good for me right now - to seal with and also to Leave in over night? I can't afford the amount of happy scalp I'm going through right now.

I love EVCO for overnight!

My HG for tangled, frizz, moisture retention, etc has been mineral oil. It was a miracle for my hair. I was about to give up, cut it off, and go back to fla ironing.

I do use jojoba oil at times for sealing, and have used SM Elixir and Burt's Bees nourishing baby oil (no MO).

I used to use Vo5 hairdressing, but haven't in forever. I may give that a try this winter.

I hear GREAT things about pure argan oil, but it's pricier than I like. I know I'll end up giving in eventually.

Btw, the SME and the BBNBO both have a good mix of oils, including argan.

HTH!!

OH! Two things -

I add EVOO to my RO (along with honey and ACV), but also to my DT's. If you do an overnight DT, that can be really good.

EVOO and EVCO are the two oils that penetrate the hair shaft, which is why they are good for moisturizing.

BUT!! EVCO may cause you issues if you are trying limit protein.

What does the ACV do for your hair when you add it to your rinse out and DT?

Sent from my SPH-D710 using CurlTalk App
I don't always put it in my DT, but I'll add some to the DT right before I rinse it out.

ACV smooths the cuticle. Plus I always used to use an "acidifying conditioner" in my pre-CG days bc stylists had told me it was a good idea for my porous hair.

I DO mix ACV with my gelatin PT, tho.

I'm thinking of you LilaGirl!

I had to color my hair today. After I colored y hair I used a clarifying shampoo and my hair felt so horrible I thought I'd be bald. Then, I used a Ouidad Omega deep treatment, and my hair still felt like steel wool.

So I applied a ton of One & Only Argan Oil Mask and left it on for a long time. The slip is excellent and it soooo moisturizing. Now my hair feels fantastic. I keep touching it because it doesn't feel like my hair. lol

I have a 4 year old daughter. I started "CG" when she was 3, because my hair was falling out like crazy and I didn't know what to do. I swear I felt "post-partum" for 3 years after she was born! I'd truly destroyed my hair with henna coloring, and I thought I'd never ever have hair I could stand. After the shedding episodes my hair grew back in as thick as it was when I was a kid, and it hasn't been this long in many many years. Maybe it's just hormones?

Still - stay away from protein for awhile!

Today I did a sheamoisture deep treatment with heat (this is the line that has argan oil and no silk or hydrolized protein). I then conditioned with the same "restorative" conditioner, left some in, used my last bit of komaza coconut pudding and more KCCC than last night. Now it'll just take 20 years to dry!

Well here's the good news! I was in the shower and couldn't find my wide-tooth comb, so I FINGER COMBED MY HAIR!!!!! OMG!!! NEVER BEFORE SEEN HERE!!!

Very exciting. And only a little fell out!!!

Are you off wheat because of a possible gluten intolerance?? Other grains also contain gluten, so you may do better if you eliminate more of them: wheat, rye, barley, oats and triticale are listed.

My hair only tangles when I use an ingredient it doesn't like. If you're tangling a lot--it could be ingredients. I stay away from a lot of chemicals in products, especially gels (like polyquats.) I just hated BRHG. It made it feel like plastic. Some of the tangles may be caused by using a lot of chemicals that build up, hence the clarifying being necessary. If you're using water soluble products, that your hair likes, you shouldn't need to clarify.

I'd try going as natural as possible with my products. Cut out the chemicals other then preservatives and see what happens with your hair. Almost like an elimination diet. There are lots of products that don't have chemicals in them. It' may be a good place for you to start.

Thanks so much for your input KAM!

I will do that. I'm finding that the simple no protein products are helping - I just got the Jane Carter shine and love it. (Though I have no idea the ingredients). I ordered some Komaza care oil - evco and argan and also their cocunut pudding. My hair likes KCCC and rich LIs. It's so much softer and less tangly!

Also, I washed my hair at noon. It's 8 pm and STILL DRYING!!!!

Haha.

okay, but it looks gorgeous - so bouncy, healthy, shiny. What a difference.

This has taken me forever to figure out! And not that I have it figured out yet but I do better w/o protein apparently and BRHG (I don't know what else I use that may have chemicals) and KAM, yes I am gluten intolerant. I get sick from gluten. So I stopped using it in my hair products recently but that didn't fix the problem.

I put on the sheamoisture conditioner to LI, did coconut pudding (komaza) (I only had a tiny bit left) KCCC and then added Happy Scalp oil to my scalp and massaged it in and Jane Carter to my ends. BeautifuL!

I don't know if the As I Am leave-in would be moisturizing enough for your hair, LG. If your hair is drinking mayo you'd need a whole bottle of it for one use! It's a very light, watery product. It's great at helping with frizz and keeping tangles away, but it's not moisturizing. I use As I Am Hydration Elation Conditioner 2-4x a month for heavy-duty moisture, and it's great. It's not a protein treatment - just soothing hydration.

I've used the As I Am leave-in a lot (and I still consider it one of my all-time best products for my hair) when I lived in CA, but I moved to AZ in June, and my hair has been even drier than before. Even when I used the As I Am, I had to use either KCKT or Coconut Curlada as a detangler/rinse. After the As I Am, I would apply Coffee Coco Curl Cream, which is also moisturizing and detangling.

The Coconut Curlada is more moisturizing than the As I Am Leave-in, but it's still on the lighter side. It's a little thicker than KCKT, and a little more moisturizing (I don't find KCKT to be very moisturizing), but I'd recommend it more as a refresher/detangling rinse than a moisturizer. The Coconut Curlada comes in a teensy 8 oz bottle, which is like a trial-sized product for me, so I think your hair would slurp it all up.

Roots of Nature (sold at Sally's) has a butter whipped coil cream that I've been curious about. It does not have protein (from what I can tell), and it looks really moisturizing. I was thinking it might be an alternative to Coffee Coco Curl Cream because it has no protein or wheat.. I have used other Roots of Nature products that are excellent.

Roots of Nature Butter Whipped Coil Cream: Aqua (Water), Glycine Soja Oil (Soybean Oil), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (Shea Butter), Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Cetyl Alcohol , Behentrimonium Methosulfate, BIS-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Butylene Glycol , Mangifera Indica Seed Oil, Mango Seed Oil, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Theobroma Grandiflorum Seed Butter), Phenoxyethanol , Fragrance , Lecithin, Quaternium-33, Hexyl Cinnamal , Sorbic Acid, VP, Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, BHT, Geraniol, Limonene, Caramel, Methylisothiazolinone, Linalool, Benzyl Alcohol, 2-Oleamido-1, 3-Octadecanediol

Have you tried GVP Conditioning Balm, yet? I think it's an outstanding moisturizer/detangler, and it's inexpensive. ($4.99 for 16 oz at Sally's). Lots of people here on the forums recommend it. It's one of those products I always have on hand because it's really, really good. I'd use it all the time but I get bored and have to try new stuff. I've used this as a leave-in as well a a co-wash, and it's terrific.

GVP Conditioning Balm: Water (Aqua), Propylene Glycol, Myristyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Decyl Oleate, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum), Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Hexyl Cinnamal, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Hydrastis Canadensis (Golden Seal) Extract, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwack) Extract, Methyl-2-Octynoate

Oh crap, and I just bought all these - including the CCCC-lite (but it has dimethicone in it? Or I don't remember now).

But maybe I'll try roots
I use biolage conditioning balm. Is it the same?

I just need every day stuff now - the sheamoisture conditioner has been working as a condish/LI and then KCCC over that and Jane Carter Shine sort of twisted in over that. Very soft, very few tangles.
