Default Tips for Reducing Shedding?

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if anybody knows ways to reduce the amount of hair shed in the comb/shower. Any tips/advice is greatly appreciated!

I be sure to shower my hair on a regular basis, like every other day. It keeps the shedding down it seems (or at least the buildup). If I go say 3-4 days w/o the shedding is unbelievable. Other than that I don't really think there'e anything you can do.

First-make sure your hair is wet and slathered with conditioner-one with "slip", then give the conditioner time to work on your tangles-about 5-10 minutes. Comb out the tangles very gently with a wide tooth comb. Sometimes it helps to let the shower run over your hair during this step. Then-realize 100 hairs is the average number shed daily (more or less depending on your hair density). This can seem to be a lot of hair if your hair is long or you are looking at the shed hairs less often than daily. If you are used to wearing your hair straight, it can seem like you are shedding more than normal because it is easier for shed hairs to fall unnoticed from straight hair than from curly hair.

Wow, I have fine shoulder length hair and my hair has been shedding like mad for a month or more - I do only wash every three days so I think that might be part of it, I get a good solid palmful of hair out of my comb!

Is this normal? How much grows back? Is it just constantly growing?

Thanks for posting this!

The way I saw it explained (though there may be newer, better info-this was a long time ago) is that we have about 100,000 hair follicles on our head. Each day about 100 start a growth cycle, 100 hairs end a growth cycle and fall out, and the growth cycle lasts about 1000 days. Some have denser hair and longer cycles, but this was supposed to be "average" when I learned it.

Caffeine! Not internally but topically. I've used coffee and tea rinses and it really helped lessen my shedding. I heard about garlic or onion juice, but I don't think it's worth smelling like one.

Keihs, can you describe your routine with the tea rinses? What sort of tea do you use? Is the coffee smell in your hair fading or does it stay the whole day?

I agree. I shower my hair regularly and get a certain amount of what I term 'normal' shedding, but if, on the odd occasion I've gone a few days without washing it, when I've washed my hair again, it's seemed like a whole head of hair was left behind in the shower, lol!

Also, minimize the amount of proteins you use. They make my hair fall out.

Thanks for the tips and advice, everyone! I think the shedding I'm experiencing is actually normal, especially since I found out that we shed about 100 hairs everyday. It just seems like a lot when I clean out the drain after I shower, lol.

Do the Curly Girl (CG) method. Do not use sulfate shampoos and conditioners with silicone. Wash hair with silicone free conditioner. Google the CG method. Also do a prepoo treatment overnight before you wash/Cowash hair with organic extra virgin coconut oil. On dry hair! Put shower cap and satin bonnet and go to bed. Google it because this response would be too long. I find that my hair barely sheds since I have been doing this.

One more thing with the CG method. You do NOT use combs or Brushes ever but only your fingers.

Like already mentioned a lot depends on density as far as what is normal. I shed a lot but I have a whole lot of hair to where people are constantly asking me if this is all my hair. so shed doesn't bother me. But bc I have so much I have to take a wide tooth comb to it at least once a week to get the shed hairs out or I get all kinds of tangling and knots.
