Here's the tip: Wait until your hair is 50% dry before clipping and then leave the clip in for about 30 minutes.

I don't know how I discovered this tip. I may even have read about it here, or seen it on Youtube.

I was never able to clip for height on top - I tried everything. The clips would just fall out of my hair and/or tangle. Then I tried waiting until my hair was at least 50% dry, grabbed a thick chunk of hair and clipped using tiny butterfly clips. The hair stayed in the clip! After 30 mins. I took out the clip and diffused a little more. I got height on top! Volume! Yippee!!!

I've been able to duplicate this effect 3 times so I know it isn't a fluke. I hope this helps someone. Please post back and let us know if it works for you.

Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.

I am going to try it Curlypearl, thanks! How do you arrange the clips? Do you have a link for the clips that you are referring to? Have you tried using hair spray on the roots and then clipping? A hairstylist once recommended that method to me.

Hi Curlswirl - Happy to hear from you! I tried to insert a link - don't know if that worked.

The clips are called roller jaw clips and they come in lots of sizes. I like your stylist's idea -I had thought of trying just the tiniest coating of gel on the clips - same idea - but I haven't tried that yet.

I was pretty haphazard about arranging the clips. It looked like a wreck while they were in each time, but it worked! I just kind of fluffed my hair when it was dry - kind of "scrubbing" the roots and the lift stayed.

I hope you can see the link, but anyway, the clips are all over in any drugstore. Good luck with this!

I have always used the clips on wet hair. I love the idea of waiting until my hair is half dry. Why didn't I ever think to do that? I use a spray gel on my clips when I refresh for second or third day hair. The clips do look a little strange, but they work. Between the clips, the plops and the pineapples, hubby is convinced I'm a total dork. But I'm a dork with great curls!

3B, fine, normal to low porosity

HGs: FSG, anything with glycerin, Tresemme Naturals conditioner, Curls Like Us cloths, satin pillowcases.
I agree, zero luck wet clipping. Now I clip when I'm finished diffusing, let it sit like that about 5 minutes. Much better results on nearly dry hair.

Growing out super short cut

High porosity, fine, unknown curl type, somewhere in the 2s at the moment
Mostly low poo
Current rotation includes:
Wash: Yes To Carrots -Condition: Yes to Cucumber, Nature's Gate Jojoba, One C - Stylers: Deva volumizing foam, Deva UDG B'Leave In, Foxy Curls Hi-Def Curl spray
I've been doing this for years - someone on here told me about it - maybe SuZen??? But I use the long plastic clips like this: http://counterculturebeauty.com/wp-c...hair-clips.jpg

I have cheapo ones from Sally's.

My hair is fine and thin so I diffuse the ends first and then hang upside down and do the top of my head. After diffusing, I run the clips in from the front towards the back of my head. Depending on how my hair looks, I may use just one that holds the 2 sides of my messy part together so it doesn't go flat. Other times, I will use several on either side of the part to get big hair all over the top. I love BIG hair but my fine hair will rarely do big but if I didn't clip on top, it would be totally flat.

I use the roller jaw clips that are available on the CHS site, Frizzoff.com. I was looking locally, but after seeing the video on youtube, I decided to spend the bucks - about $18.00 for a dozen - and get theirs. What a huge difference they have made! even my stylist wants to know where to get them. I use them on wet hair, and they do the job fine. If I need to, I can diffuse with a hot sock and to speed up the drying time, and my hair is still fine. I hated those Deva metal clips. Hated them.

More root lift, curl definition and ringlets, and best of all, they are gentle on the hair - no breakage or pulling when taking them out.

Two thumbs up! : )

My pj is growling.... getting activated. I may eventually have to try those. Would they work on thinner hair do you think?

Myrna--how do you place the clips?

How would they work on short (chin length hair)?

Curlypearl---are you still using the Anthony Dickey root lift technique with the comb at the roots or that technique along with the clipping?

Hi Curlswirl - No, I'm not using Dickey's technique for root lift. I find this technique for volume even better, but I'm definitely going back to him for my next cut!
