Hi Meera. You don't have to spend a ton of money to go CG. Yes, there's some trial and error, but figuring out your hair properties helps with the process. With your thick individual strands (coarse texture) you'd want to focus on moisture as opposed to protein.
All my products are under $10 and available on the ground locally. I started off with a Suave Naturals cowash, a Garnier Fructis rinse out (doubled as a leave in), and Herbal Essences Totally Twisted gel (1 water soluble cone). Total of $11 for everything, and only because I opted for the big bottle of Garnier.
Suave Naturals and VO5 are both fairly popular, basic cowash options. The Tresemme Naturals line works well as a cowash for some, and a rinse out conditioner for others, and still others use it as a leave in or for conditioner only styling (in lieu of a gel or other product). Garnier has a couple cone free conditioners as well. All of these are under $5 options, and I can find VO5 for under $1 on sale where I am. If you're willing to spend a bit more, you can find the SheaMoisture line at Target or Walgreens for around $10, cheaper if you can grab it during a BOGO sale. If your hair hates a conditioner you try, you can always pass it to another family member, use it to shave your legs, or even swap it on the swap board.
The online boutiques do make wonderful products, but you don't have to have them in order to start the CG journey. If and when you do decide you want to splurge on some of them, Kathymack, a poster here, sells samples. It's a great option if you aren't sure your hair will like a product, and don't want to be out a lot of money for a product if your hair hates it.
