I'm so frustrated lately. Every once in a while I just feel like venting.

Honestly, I don't see a big difference in my naked hair from pre-CG to today, over a year later. It still looks the same - stringy, thin, some weird zig zaggy pattern between a wave and a curl. I think back to my pre-CG days and never once did I have a stylist tell me my hair was damaged. But then I figured, why not try this curly thing, surely it's fried.

So I did. Jumped into protein and moisture and no sulfates and no silicones... and a year later, the biggest difference I've found is my technique. If I don't bother to style it, it looks just like it did the day I quit straightening it. I can post these great pics in the before and after thread, but trust me - they are the best of the best and I attribute those results totally to my styling techniques (such as really wet hair, plopping, scrunching, etc) which have drastically changed since pre-CG.

It doesn't really frizz, I have some between-the-curls strays and a really light halo of thin fuzz sometimes, but that's really it. It doesn't tangle, it never really has. It doesn't react to the weather - which I've heard porous hair does much more than non porous hair. Humidity doesn't make it puff up. I can do the same routine 2 days in a row, exact same steps, same products, and get COMPLETELY different results. Some days it's bouncy and curly, some days it refuses to do much of anything but look like I just rolled out of bed.

It's not fun anymore. I'm tired of fussing over it and guessing about what it will look like that day and being disappointed. I almost straightened it last night. Instead, I went back to last fall's most consistent routine and products and ended up with a so-so day, it looks okay but feels kind of weird.

On a good day, it feels soft and bouncy. On a bad day, I can't describe how it feels other than like I got something stuck in it. Producty, gunky, something like that. But like I said, a year later I have not pinpointed what works and what doesn't because one day something will and the next day it won't. I just can't believe after years of straightening, it wasn't fried. I can't believe after a year of being curly, I still don't have a single HG product or routine. Instead, I have a closet full of stuff that sometimes works great, other times does not.

I used to think protein was doing me huge benefits, but then I realized it really probably isn't since my naked hair is no different than it was a year ago. It doesn't react badly to protein, but it doesn't look any better naked after a PT.

I would leave it naked and quit trying, just let it be, but my left-alone curl/wave pattern has a mind of its own. I do feel blessed to have curly hair and I don't care how curly it is, I'd be totally happy with beachy waves or corkscrews, but my hair is a combo of both plus everything in between. It's not consistent and if I don't bother to at least scrunch, I look like I didn't try at all.

My hair feels best in the shower after a clarifying sulfate wash and a really light conditioner. Sigh. At least when I straightened it, it was predictable. I think I'm way too neurotic to have fun with this for an extended period of time It's so frustrating to read how everyone is having these amazing results after a month and a year later, I'm still looking about the same.

Okay, done ranting.
fine, thin, normal/(low?) porosity. Mod-CG. Usually I can't co-wash more than 1x a week, & sometimes I have to use T-Gel in rotation due to scalp issues.

Co-wash: VO5 Volumizing
Poo: Giovanni 50:50
RO:TN, Nexxus Youth Renewal, Alba Coconut
LI: KCKT
PT: gelatin PT, ION EC
Stylers: Giovanni mousse, TIGI Curls Rock amplifier (a-cone), Curls Rock Strong Hold Mousse
Gels: SCC spray gel

Do you know your hair properties? You may be using products that aren't the best for your hair. Take a look at the website below. It has a wealth of information. A hair analysis might be beneficial to you. It certainly was for me.

Yes I do, they're in my signature. Fine, thin, normal porosity (I think). I've used all sorts of products all over the spectrum, like I said not one is really a winner.

lc, I can really relate to what your saying. It took me about 3 years and I was very often frustrated.

I think for some people we don't just suddenly wake up and our hair is amazing.

I'm trying something which has helped me; maybe it will help you.

Keep a very simple record of what the dewpoint is each day and a little record of what you use. Start with one product after shampoo and condish. If you don't feel cg is that wonderful for you, use a shampoo and condish (and styler) that has cones without feeling guilty. Do a simple easy to do style. Maybe just scrunch and diffuse. Just keep experimenting, one product at a time. Not a bunch of products together.

I hope that is helpful for you. And there is no shame at all in deciding you'd rather wear your hair straight. Do what you want, that will make you happier.

2/c and some 3A. Modified CG.
Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
Thank you I just want my hair to be fun. It definitely doesnt like cones, my hair looks & feels like plastic, so its not that I want to go back to cones. Its just that this hasnt made a difference either really.

Juana - no hair analysis but there's no doubt in my mind it's fine. The only thing I waffle on sometimes is the porosity.

The biggest thing I learned from the CG method is how to use/apply stylers. I was full-on CG for awhile, but it was very hit-or-miss for me. I finally realized that my hair simply can't take that much moisture. So then I started doing lots of PT's, which really improved my hair. Then it dawned on me that I wouldn't have to do so many PT's if I would just quit with most of the moisture. So, I went back to the shampoo I had been using before (Giovanni 50/50). I shampoo 2-3 times a week (which is exactly what I had been doing pre-CG), and I use minimal conditioner. No PT's except for the occasional Giovanni Vita-Pro Fusion, which is a leave-in protein spray. Now I have consistently good hair days. I still don't use cones because they never worked for me anyway, but I would if they did.

If your hair feels best when you shampoo, then use shampoo. Shampoo isn't evil. If it works for you, then use it! To minimize any dryness issues, just cleanse the scalp area, and then when you rinse, the shampoo will travel down the length. That way you're cleansing the length without scrubbing the length. I do that every time I shampoo. I do the same with conditioner, but that's because excess moisture kills my hair.

I guess I feel like a failure at this lol. Like isnt CG supposed to improve the health of your naked hair? It sure hasnt appeared to do so for mine. Which makes me wonder if it wasnt that unhealthy to begin with & it was a technique issue for me.

CG didn't improve the health of my naked hair --or if it did, it didn't LOOK any different. The only thing so far that has changed the look of my naked hair is Henna. My hair is smoother looking. But, you gotta love red hair if you're going to use Henna!

There are different aspects to cg. The part that most improved my hair was not shampooing every single day! which I used to do. Shampooing less frequently (even though I use a mild sulfate shampoo at least once a week) made a big difference to me.

I'm undecided whether using cones or sulfates makes a difference to my hair. Everyone's hair/curls are different - so you needn't feel like a failure at all if your hair doesn't respond to the party-line cg message. Maybe a change in technique is all that you need.

Good luck and please let us know how you are doing over time!

I have been on this ride for about 10 months, and I relate. I believe my hair is healthier even though it doesn't look or feel much different. I have days when I decide to just wet it, comb it back, and forget all the scrunching, plopping, upside down, and all the worries. I haven't given up, really. I just sometimes choose to give up for today. Tomorrow comes and I try again. I do another pt and like the results enough to rekindle the flame, so I keep on truckin'. This life is short, do what makes you happy. Live your life for yourself, period.

Experimenting with too many products to name here. All this great info keeps my head spinning.
I went no-poo in July of 2011. I soon realized I had curly hair. I spent the next YEAR trying to find my groove. I found this site at some point but didn't really look at it until a couple of months ago. As soon as I really looked at it and determined my hair properties (namely protein needs and porosity) it has greatly improved. Seriously. Finally, *fifteen months later* I have consistent good hair days. Now I am moving in to perfecting it - narrowing down more ingredients my hair likes/doesn't like, learning about dew points, etc. there is hope but, you're right, if you are becoming bitter and frustrated with the process maybe it's time to just take a break and not worry about it for a while. Good luck.
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!!
My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.

I feel how you feel pretty much every.single.day. It is extremely frustrating hearing about everyone's great hair days and HG products. I discovered this site in 2009 and I still don't have a magic combo or go to product! I've gone through too many products to list and I'm still very obsessed with the swap board and trying new products. I've also been cursed with being a perfectionist so 'the grass is always greener' and 'my hair could always be better'.

One of the things that happened recently and made me feel 100% better about my hair was getting my roots done at a salon and having them "style" it curly. It looked hideous when she was done! So pouffy, no definition, it felt awful to the touch and I couldn't wait to get home, do a DT then wash it and style it myself!

Another thing I've been doing lately is going back in time and looking at older pictures of me. Not just pictures from a few years back, those are depressing also. I'm talking elementary school when my hair was literally a curse. I was always told to 'brush my hair', so guess what, I had to brush my hair if it was dry or not!

If I only knew then what I know now…*sigh*

We've had some really thick fog up here in Northern MI for the last couple of days and my hair is looking pretty frizzy. But you know what? I'm starting to care a little less because I know it looks better than what anyone else can do to my hair.
