What is WITH one section of my hair?

The top layers of my hair are the shortest because of a necessary chop I self-performed over a year ago. On the sides of my head, not the "bangs" or the back, I'm finding that the last couple of inches of these layers, which reach about the length to my ear if I stretch them out, feel dry and brittle even when soaked with KCKT. They're where horns would be if I was a goat or something. These sections of hair feel like a different texture from the rest of my hair, and sometimes they feel almost melted together because they get so knotted up.

I find myself accidentally tearing knots out of my hair at least once a day, and I've had to cut out several impossible tangles.

It wouldn't seem as odd if this was happening with the longer hair, that's been attempting to survive on my head for years. But this is the shortest hair on my head, and only on the sides of my head. Is this typical of hair, or am I possibly doing something to aggravate this hair.

Also, this top "canopy" layer is the part of my hair most affected by frizz and dew points. If any part of my hair is going to frizz and not curl, it's this part.

the driest part of my hair is the sides, right around my face.
i always add extra conditioner there, add it as i style my hair, after my hair is dried, and before i go to sleep.
what has helped the most is sealing it!! what a huge difference, it's actually very curly now.
so i suggest extra conditioner and sealing. see what happens.

I don't really know how to seal my hair.

Do you have any special oil recs for sealing? Are some leave-ins better than others for layering with oils?

I use oils on my hair overnight about twice a month, but, so far, I haven't used one for day wear. I use them before I cleanse my hair, because some of them make the ends of my hair feel matted. I've used pure jojoba oil, EVOO, Jessicurl Oil Blend, Moroccanoil, Fructis Moroccan Oil, One & Only Argan Oil, Lanolin-Cholestrol hot oil treatments, Rosewater & Glycerin (disaster), etc. but none of them seem like something I could style with because they make my hair so clumpy.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong? A lot of the problem may be that I haven't had the right combination of leave-in, and/or styling product, and oil.

On completely clean hair, the pure jojoba oils seems to work best for allowing my curls to form naturally, but it doesn't provide definition or hold. Plus, it seems like I have to use an awful lot to feel like its adding moisture to my hair. All the argan oil products I've used are loaded with the kinds of silicones my hair doesn't seem to tolerate well at all (dimethicone, cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, etc. For some reason, my hair seems to like amodimethicone...).

Today, those two sections of my hair were so darn tangled I had to pull my hair apart even when it was soaked with KCKT!

i don't know much about sealing, but i will tell you what i know.

sealing does not add moisture to your hair, it just helps lock it in so the moisture won't evaporate in the dry air. it will not define your curls, or give hold.

moisture is the most important thing for curly hair, so keeping it in is an important thing. my hair does not seem to like straight oils (although i have never used jojoba and would if i could just buy a sample size). what i do use is emollient butter/products. the one i have been using mostly is jane carter nourish and shine.

i use either a daily conditioner or deep conditioner as leave in or a leave in styling conditioner, ie, cj honey butta. then i blot my hair with a curl friendly towel, then spread a pea size amount of the jc n&s on my hands and fill my head over and scrunch my hair. flip my head up and do the same again. that has been working for me. some people seal on dry hair as they SOTC. i tried that and this seems to be better for my hair.

everyone's hair is different, so you have to find what works best for yours. if you go onto the 4 boards you will most likely find a lot more info about sealing.

Thanks rbb, you've helped me a lot. I never understood what "sealing" was supposed to do, but it makes perfect sense now.

Your hair is gorgeous!

thank you! and you are welcome.

if you use a curl enhancer, i think that can go either over or under the sealer, but again, there are more people on here who know more about it. when i use cj honey butta, that is my leave in and styler, so then i seal.
not sure, but i think some people use a curl enhancer/styler over the sealer, some under. experiment, see what your hair likes.
