I have discovered that Suave Naturals Strawberry Conditioner and DevaCurl One Condition give me the exact same frizz and breakage issue. I also noticed they have a couple of similar ingredients, namely chlorides.

Suave Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Distearyldimonium Chloride, Disodium EDTA, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1, 3-Diol, Tocopheryl Acetate [Vitamin E Acetate], Propylene Glycol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Polysorbate 20, Methylisothiazolinone, Strawberry Juice, Red 33, Orange 4.

DCOC Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Glycol Distearate, Cetyl Esters, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Propylene Glycol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum)

I am having a problem finding much information online about any issues with chlorides...I can find a lot about how good they are for hair. lol. I found one post here that mentions a couple people having problems with them.

I did use JessiCurl Confident Coils today and my hair, while it is not dry yet, feels amazing. I thought to check after applying the product and it does have one chloride in it - the Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride. It is further down on the list...I will continue to use the trial size I have to see if I have issues.

So, anyway, I am wondering if anyone can help me out with information? Do you know anything about the different chlorides and any related issues?

If you have problems with chlorides, is it all of them? Just some? Lower down on ingredient list is ok/not ok? I know I will have to just see what does and doesn't work for my hair, but I would like to hear from others as well.

Thanks!

My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.
Potassium chloride may be drying as its a derivative of salt...behentrimonium chloride is a very heavy conditioning agent, and can coat my hair..which then blocks moisture...I had probs with Devacurl one c. I don't use it anymore. I can't leave suave in. Not enough moisture. Too many humectants. Wonderful rinse out though...

LowP: Kinky Curly Come Clean (50% EVOO)
NoP: As I Am CC
RO: Suave Coconut, VO5 Shea Cashmere
LI: KCKT or CJBCLI or HETT/HENOYF (w/ 8 drops GSO)

Thank you for the information. Interesting about the coating the hair and blocking moisture out - that makes sense.

I know I cannot use suave long term even as a RO but I still have some and my CJ is running low so I grabbed it thinking it would be ok for a few uses. I did not recall the breakage before but I have learned a lot about hair care since I last used it - so I may have not known what to look for at the time. Regardless, after only the second use my hair looked like it did on DC after a couple of weeks. (Which I also no longer use).

Thanks again. My hair gets better and better every day as I learn what to avoid, what to use, and what to balance and how. Chlorides...who knew?
