Default Had to shampoo

After about a month of only using Devacurl No-Poo, a CG friendly conditioner, Devacurl styling products, flax seed gel (homemade) and jojoba oil....my hair got limp, straight and just weird. It didn't feel oily or icky, just weird and not itself. Straight and strange limpness.

So I shampoo'ed. It curled back up. I am thinking I got some build-up. Maybe from the flax seed gel? I do not use silicones and haven't in years, so it wasn't that.

I tried CG back in 2004. "True" CG, modified..You name it. Messed with it for 3 years. Got some allergies and gave up. I have been using mild shampoo ever since, and no silicones.
This summer I decided to try again, got the new CG book (I had the old back then). Doesn't seem to work this time either.

It makes me wonder how many "true" CG really works for? How many can follow what is in the book (and I do love the idea of it) and get away with it for life, not used for time periods, without the hair going weird? I tried so many products back then, did deep treatments, stuff. A constant catch-up to please the hair..My hair took way more time to deal with than before I found the CG book..I just could not make it work. Oh well. No big deal. I am just wondering...does it work in real life...?

Anyways, just pondering this a bit this evening.
Over & out.

My scalp goes itchy insane and my hair gets matted if I don't poo. I'm a 2c (I think???) I guess I'm modified CG. I think you take the CG rules and apply what works for you. I poo but instead of every day as I did in the past, I poo about ever 3rd or 4th day. I eliminated most badcones. I tried different forms of gel which seems to work wonders for most, but they don't work for me, so I used mousse. LOL I say do what works for you!

My hair is very fine and the porosity is on the low side. That combination means that my hair is easily weighed down and has difficulty absorbing products. Many products just sit on my hair, making it a limp, stringy mess. Deva products were the worst offenders. I agree with Cristy_amk. You need to tweak the rules to find the products and techniques that work best for you. I need to low-poo every 3-4 days, have eliminated harmful 'cones and heat styling. I'm treating my hair more gently with microfiber towels and satin pillowcases. I do regular protein treatments. While I rarely have "perfect" curls, my hair is healthier, curlier and the frizz is minimal. Healthy hair is beautiful hair!

Deva NoPoo (and a lot of their other products) has Polyquaternium-7. I find that it "coats" my hair and doesn't allow it to absorb products. For me, it requires a rather strong surfactant to remove it (although I've been told that it's not buildup.)

I shampoo daily. My hair is fine and there are no signs of dryness. I tried to go poo-less for a while and it was not for me. My hair felt and looked sad.. lol! I assume it's most successful for dryer hair types that don't require daily washings? (lucky!) I agree that with any type of "one size fits all" recipe - tweaking will be required!!
Typical 3a!

I agree with everyone else. It all comes down to what works for you. I can use a cleansing conditioner exclusively without any issues (I had issues with DevaCURL No-Poo and One C but found that my hair really likes DevaCARE. I also use CJ Daily Fix). I can use a very light conditioner as a co-wash (my favorite is VO5 Vanilla Mint Tea), and I've co-washed for 7 straight days without issues, but I'm not sure I could do this indefinitely. I've found most low-poos that I've tried leave my hair feeling dry and stripped, so I found a very gentle sulfate shampoo (CHS Treatment Shampoo) that I use prior to my PTs or anytime I feel like I need a little extra cleansing. It's packed with protein (which my hair loves) and leaves my hair softer than most low-poos I've tried.

I can't co-wash exclusively or use a cleansing conditioner either. I always try but after a week or so it just doesn't work. Low-pooing works so well though, and I find my hair gets more moisturized because there's no build up. Co-washing is awesome in theory, but my fine, wavy curls just can't do it.

Thanks for your comments ladies. I do agree that one has to do what seems to work for ones own hair. : )
I am going to try to shampoo only 1-2 times a week. See if that works.

I think I am giving up the Devacurl products. I tried several of them years ago and had problems to make them work. I tried the care line also, but it had (at least back then) chemical sunblocker and I am allergic to that. I noticed that One Condition no longer has a silicone in it like it used to.

Anyways, back to my shampoo and conditioner I have used for years.
Trying/hoping to make leaving in the conditioner and jojoba oil work as only styling products.

Have a good day everyone. : )

So I tried it again... the no-poo method of cleansing... All I can say is that I can't wait to shampoo my hair in the morning! My hair is really p.o.'d this time!!! Great day for a hat... and maybe dark glasses!

My hair got straighter on no-poo. Hit me yesterday. Lol
Not doing what is is supposed to do on CG.

I was a member on here several years ago (I can't get in to that account, not sure if it still there, but that is ok.) and it seemed to be very few that could follow the CG book long term... I am not sure of course, but my impression was that way.
