Wavy/Curly MESS!! :(

I only just start CG on Sunday and I washed with just conditioner that night, the only conditioner I had was Head n Shoulders. Then this morning I tried to wash with just conditioner again but I used a Suave naturals conditioner. My hair felt disgusting in the shower and I just ended up using a bit of the Suave shampoo. I tried the plopping method- made no difference then I used a diffuser to dry it.

It doesn't feel bad right now, I have really thick hair but it feels light on my head and there is wavy curly mixture (pic below) Every picture I see of a 2c isn't me and even 2b but I am definitely not 2a, it's all confusing to me right now!

I am frustrated because I want more curl so...
should I give if I give it time to adjust will it have more defined curl?
Will using sulfate free shampoo and a cleansing conditioner help more curls come out?
Is there a sulfate free shampoo or something cheaper I can get at a store like target or vitamin shoppe?

Also, what is a good cleansing conditioner that I can buy from a drug store?

Check out my hair picture and tell me any ideas you have, thats my "this sucks help me" face!

Hi Noelle

Did you do a final sulfate wash before you started CG? If not, you'll want to do that to remove any build up etc. from prior silicone use and give you a clean slate to start from. Any sulfate poo will do, just make sure it does not contain any silicones (anything ending in -cone or -xane).

For co-washing, which conditioner you you use or whether you use a low poo (sulfate free shampoo) will depend on your hair properties and how it responds to different ingredients. Hair properties include texture (how course or thin the individual strands are), density (how much hair you have), and porosity (how raised or smooth the cuticle is). You can fin a lot of good info about hair properties at www.livecurlylivefree.com. A lot of people use SN or V05 to co-wash; my hair doesn't care for this, but I like As I Am coconut co-wash (found at Sally's beauty). I also like Curl Junkie Daily Fix as a cleansing condish, or Shea Moisture coconut and Habiscus shampoo for a low poo (available at Walgreens, Target, etc.). Some people can co-wash exclusively, others need to low-poo or clarify on occasion to remove build up (particularly fine-haired curlies as we are more prone to build up). Once you know your hair properties, you can check out other people with similar properties to see what they use as a starting point. But ultimately it does take some trial and error, and there is usually an adjustment period for your hair when you first go CG.

2c/3a, botticelli/wavy/'swavy (huh?)
fine, dense, normal porosity/elasticity, dry climate

My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!
