Revisiting my 3b CG hair after years--what's new? What should I do? Advice please!
I've been around these boards forever, but haven't spent time on the hair boards in years. I have 3b curls, that I like a little better when they're pulled out a bit to 3a curls. I have a LOT of hair, and a TON of volume. I'd guess it's described as coarse and high porosity. It's about shoulder length, and I'm working on growing it out longer. I only wet my hair every few days. My second-day hair is a little frizzier, but fine. I actually like it better than first-day hair. Third day hair is fine on days where I'm not trying to impress anyone. :-)
I've been using the Deva Care products for years now, and I really like them. The One Conditioner and ArcAngel gel, with some of the Set me Up pomade stuff for a little extra hold and weight. Also, coconut oil has been a bit of a holy grail for me--I use it as an occasional deep conditioner, or occasionally as a sealant.
Lately I've been feeling like my hair is a little frizzy and unmanageable. I was hoping someone could give me some insights. Do you think I would benefit from a protein treatment, or would that make my hair go crazy? I have no idea if my hair loves/hates protein. Maybe I should just use more coconut oil for a while? Or is a different kind of oil better? Is there an awesome CG-friendly product that I should use instead of something I already do?
Frizz, too much volume, and a coarse feel are my biggest issues overall.
(Note: I've been away from these boards for so long that I have no idea what most of the abbreviations mean anymore, so if anyone is nice enough to respond, please spell it out for me!)

Deva products have their fair share of protein and the coconut oil may be holding on to the protein like crazy glue... Which can dry u out...With that said u may need to rotate in some protein-less moisturizing products to balance things out. Maybe a new curl cream, gel or leave in? Protein overload?

Thanks, I had no idea that the Deva products had protein in them! Any suggestions on protein-less moisturizing products?

Welcome back! I agree w/ NvmbrCurlss, Deva has protein...my hair is VERY similar to your description & it doesn't like protein OR Deva Angel.
Kinky Curly has always given me nice, soft curls, good definition & not the crunch. I use all 3, Come clean, Knot today & curling custard.
However recently I've been dabbling w/ the Shea moisture procucts to

How would you know if you have too much protein. I did not know this with my Deva One Conditioner.
I also heard with coarse hair, one should avoid protein products, no?

Battling frizzy hair since the beginning, would like to see less of this but tolerable right now.

These are the ingredients in the DevaCare ArcAnGEL. Is it the peptides that are the proteins (I underlined them)?
Water (Aqua, Eau), VP/VA Copolymer, Glycerin, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Citrus Aurentium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract, Triticum Aestivum (Wheat) Peptide, Avena Sativa (Oat) Peptide, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Peptide, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, DMDM Hydantoin, Aminomethyl Propanol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Fragrance (Parfum), Red 33 (CI 17200), Yellow 5 (CI 19140)
These are the ingredients in the DevaCare One Condition. I don't notice anything that looks protein-like to me. Am I missing something?
Water (Aqua, Eau), Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Cetyl Esters, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Wax, Citrus Aurentium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Propylene Glycol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Fragrance (Parfum), Red 40 (CI 16035), Yellow 5 (CI 19140)
I'm gonna try rotating in some other products and see if there's an effect. I'm thinking of trying some things from the Curl Junkie line.

I think maybe the glycerin might also be a bit of an issue, from what I just read on a thread on the 4a board (it came up in a search for glycerin). Maybe with the fall/winter dry weather, I can't use so much glycerin.
As an aside, when I started coming on these boards like a million years ago (actually, wow, I was still in college, so around 10 years ago!) there was so much less known about ingredients. I'm a scientist, so I loooove all the emphasis on the ingredients now. I've learned so much just browsing in a day on these boards, that wasn't at all known or understood back then! Go curlies!

While "hydrolyzed", "protein", "amino acids" and other obvious proteins like soy milk or gelatin /collagen are fairly easy to spot, herbal extracts can also function as proteins. Plants have protein in them, so herbal (plant) extracts do too. They aren't generally as much of an issue as the "obvious" proteins, but can be problematic for some.
Some can use glycerin regardless of dewpoint, while others can't use it at all, or can in only certain dewpoints. If I don't want dry, frizzy hair, I avoid it in gels until dews are at least 40, preferably 50 or higher. It seems to be ok for me in conditioners /leaveins if they have a higher amount of oils or butters than glycerin in them.

Hops can also act as a protein as it is a strengthener...

And unfortunately, I can't use glycerin in any dewpoint...unless I'm rinsing it out...

I'm on my second time using some Curl Junkie products--smoothing conditioner, a leave-in, and pattern pusha gel. My curls felt great and were amazingly bouncy, but I need more hold!
Any suggestions for a gel I can use on to for better hold? Ideally with no glycerin, protein, or cones! And a ton of hold!
