What would be the first steps to take?

Ok..here is my hair story. I used to have more a type 3A until my last pregnancy in which my hair took a turn to a 3B type. I've always had the crown layer especially dry, almost rough and unruly like.

I wash about twice a week, with whatever, really never realized the products I used would make such a difference. Lately my scalp has been itching after washing so something is going on.

I currently own pantene pro-v, suave coconut I believe and that's about it. I don't really use anything on my hair except when I blow dry it I use Biosilk.
I don't do leave in, weekly deep conditionings or anything else. My hair is always frizzy and dry and ends always look super toasted although I very seldomly blow dry it.

I've been reading on this board since yesterday about different products, etc... I've read about clarifying, shampooless, and all sorts of things that I've never done.

I'd like to know what should I do? What steps should I take to get my hair healthy? Clarify how often? shampoo how often? Deep condish? etc, etc... All your kind help would be so appreciated.
I highly recommend getting a copy of Lorraine Massey's book "Curly Girl", if you can (Libraries often have it. I got mine used, in very good condition, from half.com.). It's a wonderful foundation for the information you'll get here. I'm almost one years into my curly "voyage" and have made many changes to finally get to a routine that's working for me. I don't follow the CG program exactly, but I'm happy to have tried it. I learned a lot from it about my hair and what it likes/dislikes. Unfortunately, there will be no substitute for trial and error:-) For example, I discovered that my hair hates proteins. That means I cannot use many of the conditioners and stylers that others here swear by. Check out the videos on the Jessicurl site, too. Lots of good info there. Again, you'll have to pick and choose what works for you.

Good luck and welcome!
Couple of inches past shoulder length 3A. Shampoo every 3rd or 4th day w/ baby shampoo; Tigi Fashionista conditioner; back to Condition 3-in-1 mousse . Alternate days water rinse, conditioner and mousse.
There will be some trial and error involved, no way around it. As you read more you'll see how different eveyones hair is, even people with the same hair type will respond differently to the same products sometimes. First, stop using the Pantene, it has too much silicone which will coat your hair and not allow moisture in. Curly hair needs moisture, that's how we cut down on the frizz and soften the hair. Some people have good luck with Suave, I think mainly straight haired people, and some don't. I never did, as much as I wanted to because it's cheap, my hair stayed too dry. Until you get moisture back in your hair I'd stay away from the blow dryer, and then only with a diffuser!

As for products, there's a lot of good product here to choose from. One product I think a lot of people will agree with me on is Curl Junkie Hibiscus & Banana Deep Fix Moisturizing Conditioner. When my hair's in good shape I can use it only once a week, but when it's dry I'll use it everytime I shampoo until I feel like I've got the moisture back. When you rinse you can leave a little in if you're not using another leave-in. When my hair is dry I'll use Elucence S&C, or any of the Curl Junkie products. You should get a lot of good ideas from the others here too. Keep asking questions anytime, there's lots of good help here.
