Compare CK and KY, please!
Anyone tried both? Are they really comparable? Was one better? How do you use each?
I'm dying to try CK, but then I have KY and it works ok, but I think it's a little glycerin heavy for lower dews... Unless I'm not using it right...

I would love to try CK, but it is hard to get here in Canada at a reasonable price, and has to be ordered off the web...
I have been using KY for the last few days, just putting it in after my LI, I use about a quarter-size x 3 for the crown and two sides of my hair. What I am finding is that you have to use a lot - others here have said same, when I researched the KY. Many emulsify with the same amount of water (put whole tube of KY in with equal amount of water in a container, and shake to mix) and they say that way it works just like CK...I can't say as haven't tried the CK, but this will be my next move, as I find applying it straight from the tube works well for the first few hours, but then the curls droop.
What I do find about KY is that it seems to work way better when you rewet hair on the second day...add a bit of gel on top of that, and have very curly (if a tad frizzy) day two hair. Well, that's been my experience - hth!

Thanks for the input! So 50/50 Ky/water then? Interesting. Maybe I'll give that a go.
I can't just wet my hair for 2nd day - it would be a frizzy, stringy in places, matted mess. :/ It's too long, dense, and fine. Plus my curl pattern is too mixed. If I rewet, I seriously have to condition and detangle, or I'm asking for trouble! I can sometimes spritz with water (and condish and aloe, typically), but re-wetting is a huge no-no!

I'm glad you started this thread. I have only used a sample if CK. I loved how defined my curls were BUT the glycerin gave me allllotttttt of trouble in the low dew. I'm assuming the ky has glycerin also?
I'm out if my sample of CK but wouldn't use this again in low dews. I plan on trying KY in higher dews. If KY is just as good I can't see spending the money on CK

KY is very heavy on the glycerin, I'm afraid. I had trouble in low dews with it, but I wonder if I up the LI and oil if it might be ok. I'll experiment and post here of it works!
I hear great things about it, but my hair is so porous that it dries out somewhat easily.
Surely there are some people who have tried both??

I just wanted to note that the different types of KY have different amounts of water/glycerin. I have tried both the KY Jelly and the KY liquid and the liquid has higher glycerin levels(and worked better for me).
Just be aware of what type you are buying! I have never tried CK, but I do love KY.

I'm a huge CK fan and just caved and tried the KY. First time I used way too much (I have a ton of hair so I'm used to needing a lot of product). Have tried it a few times since and feel like I need to experiment with it more, especially after I get my hair cut. I seemed to have increased tangles on the days I used it but I want to rule out other causes before I blame the KY. CK doesn't give me these issues, so I know it's not glycerin.

Corrina!!! I'm glad you chimed in on this!!! Yeah, please let me know - I had the same experience with tangles!
I thought perhaps it was the AMOUNT of glycerin in the KY that might be doing it? Maybe it was the amount of KY I used, as you said!
Let me know how it goes for you! And did you see the advice about mixing it 50/50 with water?
Thanks!

I haven't tried diluting with water, but I'm already applying to sopping wet hair. I've tried layering and I've also tried mixing it in with my gel (tried this method with Deva UDG and Biotera Gel). The weird thing is that I normally don't have glycerin issues, regardless of dews. I am admittedly horribly due for a trim, so I can't really tell what issues are product related and what issues are just due to very damaged ends.

Hmm... Well, let me know what you get figured out!
I don't typically have issues with glycerin, either, though I do find I need to cut back a little in lower dews.
I may try diluting it, maybe adding some LI and oil, and see if that makes a difference.
Sigh.

Do you find glycerin dries out your hair? I mean, I was using KY for three washes in a row over the period of a week, had great and very curly hair with it, and I skipped it yesterday. After my hair was dry, I found it really misbehaved and felt like hay ;p limp hay, at that. I thought maybe it was an after-effect from using the KY...?

Can't say for sure, other than it is drying to my hair in lower dews. I can still use glycerin, I just have to be careful with the amounts. In the spring/summer it's not a problem.
So it could be that, but not necessarily, I guess.
Sorry - I realize that's not very helpful!!

Actually that was helpful thanks, Jas! I suspected it might have been that. Maybe I should lay off it for a while, or at least use less! There is a lot of humidity in the air here due to massive snow dumps etc but it is tending towards much colder air, so perhaps that is why.

Ok- I ended up getting my hair cut yesterday (got to be a hair model for DevaCurl Academy in NYC!!!), so I will start experimenting with the KY again, now that I can rule out desperate need of a trim as a reason for incessant tangles.

Tried KY this morning and so far, so good. I will note that I used it under a glycerin-free gel, so that might have helped (GVP Liquid Sculpting Gel- glycerin-free and loaded with protein- I already see it as a permanent part of my stash).

Ooooo.... Is this GVP gel CG? What is it the generic for??
I'm heading to Sally's soon, and am making a list - LOL!!
Oh! And keep me posted on your hair by the end of the day!

Jas and Corrina, do you think it makes a difference if it is used under a layer of something else, or over as last layer...? I saw elsewhere here another poster saying she uses it as a finishing step and it doesn't dry out the hair (though I know there are tons of variables!) - I tried my KY the other day over Aussie Instant Freeze gel (which is da bomb, by the way!) as a last step, and it seemed to work pretty well! (My hair is not dry and I haven't washed it yet)....

Jas- the GVP Liquid Sculpting Gel is CG- it's a generic for Sebastian Wet. I picked it up on whim after someone on WHC asked about it. So far I'm loving it.
Knotty Maddy- since I always heard of KY as a substitute for Curl Keeper, I just automatically used it the same way I use Curl Keeper, which is over leave-in and under gel (I'm still deciding if I like it better over or under my curl enhancer). I generally air dry my hair so I skip finishing products (I normally SOTC at work around lunchtime).
