My hair is insane - super sensitive, knotty, help!

Like Tree4Likes

So just as far as an update goes - I did a suave (ocean) cowash which worked out nicely - it was even detangling and I could come my fingers through my hair.

This was after I did some dusting for single-strand knots.

Then I soaked my hair in Biolage c. balm and put it a shower cap and ran warm water over it while I showered, I went to come it out and my hair was SO soft - barely any knots or fall out!

I ro'd a bit and then applied Curl Rehab and did a 30-minute heated turban on that

I Ro'd and used an ample amount of KCKT and then AOMM

Took a while to dry but I have nice curls and a teeny bit of frizz but no dryness. My hair kept getting snowed on and I spritzed it with a little water and jojoba oil (I just made that last part up)

My hair actually looks like Waterlily's except much shorter and with tighter curls -

One of the HUGE things I'm realizing is that I may not have been using enough product. I always used a TON of product but then people here always say use a "pea-size" amount or a quarter - well, a TON of product seems to work for me.

And I probably need to do weekly DT's

We'll see how this goes tomorrow and if it gets dry and brittle or if it can hold out for 2nd-day hair - still not sure how to "do" 2nd-day hair, but I'll watch some more WL videos and find out!

Yeah, I guess I'm going to have to love gray - though I know I won't.

I didn't realize I can do brown - I def. don't want red. Does it cover grays well? Is it conditioning or just ... color? And isn't it protein?

I'm confused - she says to use less humectants in lower dews and humectants are honey glycerin and panthenol - which makes sense, but then she says in low dews she uses a softer-hold gel like AO b5 which is all humectants?!

Avocado is protein. Also, aloe behaves like a protein so some protein sensitive people have to avoid it.
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!!
My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.
I figured the avocado or the macademia was protein, right?

I didn't know about aloe - I'm watching that as a possible "trigger" for my hair

But now I have horsetail and nettle on my list! Ugh!

Between finding protein-free products for the right dewpoints, getting moisture back in my hair, trying new methods, and then identifying ingredients that aren't working! Ugh!

So another update - did the same routine as yesterday - suave ocean cowash (which is really helping to scrub my scalp and not use poo) and biolage condish in a cap/warm water, barely any tangles or fall out!!

And TONS of LI - no more "pea size" or quarter size this - I'm using AMPLE amounts b/c my hair needs it.

Today, instead of KCKT, I'm trying "As I Am" b/c it's a little heavier and (I think) more emollient, then I did AOMM scrunched it all and we'll see!

Well, look at the ingredients, I don't know if it's more emollient or okay for Low Dews, but just trying it out.

As I Am

Lila, I think it is awesome that you are trying all this stuff out, because it's the only way to figure out one's hair ;p I truly am seeing nothing works the same way on any two people, but, that one can tweak the solutions of other people to suit one's own needs. I am really happy that you are having a breakthrough!

I also think it was really nice of waterlily to come in and chat with you I see she is just as nice as she is in her videos!
Finer, mixed with coarser strands, low-porosity, wavy curly whirly hair...3A, 2C hair. Medium thickness, medium elasticity.
S-shaped hair with corkscrew ends. My hair is even more confused than me ;p
My hair officially hates protein Once a month is enough!
Currently a fan of TiGi products, (rock on, TiGi Curlesque styling creme!) but that will soon change - I am a self-avowed product junkie! Yay!
BIG fan of supersoaker method - thanks Rudeechick!

Yay, Waterlily!

Someone ion this post or another pointed me to you, Sara and I'm so glad they did - I feel supported in my hair journey!!!

And I am loving my breakthrough. I really needed someone to spell things out and all your videos are exactly what I needed. Thanks!!!

So I had really good results from the As I am -

Got second day hair, no dryness and no frizz at night

I wish I could post a photo here, but it's on my iphone, and I don't know how.

But WOW!

So - I wonder why As I am worked so much better than KCKT - I don't know that it's more "emollient" really - but it is heavier, seemingly -

My other question is that if this worked well and I didn't get any reactions, does that mean my hair is okay with coconut and glycerin?

See, this is where I get tripped up - I can use something, and seems fine, so I assume I'm okay with coconut or whatever ingredient - but it's somehow possible that I'm still not? How do others determine what ingredients are affecting them when there are so many variables?

So I think I'll continue to co-wash every day or every other, do my biolage (or GVP) conditioning balm condish - a weekly DT with curl rehab- and then just experiment with LIs and gels - I ordered some gels on amazon and the oyin, but I still have a few more LIs I can play around with while still using AOMM....

At least I'm finally getting somewhere!

Hooray for progress!! I love the AIA LI. It's much more moisturizing than KCKT. I pretty much alternate between that and Cure Care (a lighter conditioner with a nice dose of protein).

Someone in another thread mentioned I Might be reacting to horesetail? Seems so - I used Curlycue Renew today - same routine, just keep changing up my LI and got a bit of fuzz and that slight "dry" a little tangly feeling. So I'm going to avoid this one.
Curlycue ReNew: distilled water, certified organic burdock root, certified organic amla, certified organic horsetail, pathenol, BTMS, cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, glycerin, calendula officinalis flower extract, sunflower extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, carrageenan extract, slippery elm, marshmallow root, guarsilk, olive oil, avocado oil, meadowfoam oil, phenoxyethanol, caprytly glycol and fragrance.

Also had a LONG talk with the woman at LiveCurlyLive Free (mary pat) today! I'll write all about it - she and I are HAIR TWINS!!!

Nice to see things are going so well! Don't give up! Keep trying things out, techniques and products - you will eventually find what works. Also nice to have a hair twin, eh? It helps!

Glad things are looking up for you! Keep in mind too that your hair may have a bad reaction to one product with horsetail (or other ingredient) but it may be fine with another product with the same ingredient....it truly all depends on the formulation of the products.

Keep us posted with what you find that works for you. I try different stuff here and there in hopes of finding replacements for my stash of discontinued HG products that will eventually dwindle away.

Can't wait to hear what Mary Pat had to say! Maybe we're hair triplets!

Waterlily, I will try that!!

Okay, so today I used smoothing lotion as the leave in (everything else the same) - I got great curls, softer, but I could see they were not held together well - IDK why. Dewpoints were up to 45 or more today so that's higher than the 20 they have been but

Nothing here jumps out at me. Maybe Smoothing Lotion and AOMM just don't play well together? Not sure. Out the window it goes!
