How do I make my natural hair look nicer?

Like Tree15Likes

Yeah yeah, I know I'm young (you'll be able to tell in the pics I post) but don't just answer with "You're too young to worry about looks" because whether I am or not, I do worry.

So I went to school today with straight hair, and everybody said I looked "a lot better". Agh! That was like a slap in the face >_< I've always hated my hair, but now I feel even worse. *sigh*

Here's me with my natural hair:

And me this morning:

Anyway, is there anything I can do to make my hair look nicer (I don't use animal tested products, so don't suggest things owned by proctor&gamble etc)? I know there's probably a wealth of knowledge on this forum, but I have a lot of things to do and not enough time to browse around. My hair is reminiscent of a mop, and I feel really, really ugly -_-

Thanks for any help ~ Elisabeth
You are not ugly. You're very pretty, and I love your curls. They make you look fun.

What's your current curly hair routine? It's hard to suggest something if we don't know what products and how you apply them... how you sleep on your hair.. etc.

You are super cute! The difference they are probably noticing (therefore commenting on) is the frizz. I can tell in your pic there is not a ton of definition in your curls. What's your products?
I use Shea moisture and I really like it, smoothed a lot of my frizz down.

You are so cute....seriously, never think you look ugly!! Your hair looks good both ways, but I love the curly hair.....amazing volume! Maybe work on defining the curls more - do you use gel or leave-in conditioner? Shampoo?

Also, know that people tend to like whatever is different. I wore my hair STRAIGHT from age 7 - 22....when I went curly everyone raved about how cute it was, how it looked great, etc. Then I changed cities, and my friends here have only ever known me with CURLY hair - and they see pics of the straight haired me and rave about how cute it looks, how I should try and straighten it again, etc. People just like seeing something DIFFERENT, it's not that your curly hair doesn't look nice!

If I'm going to wear a ponytail or bun out of the house, I'll put some gel by "Aussie" l that's so old (from the time I still used animal tested things) they no longer sell it.
I comb my hair while its still wet, and then ponytail it to dry because otherwise, it'll end up quite frizzy at the top and it looks pretty... crazy X)
I sleep with my hair in a ponytail.
And that's all I do to my hair, ever, except maybe the occasional dye or bleach (on only one spot every time, the one in the second photo).

Again, thanks guys
I agree with everyone else you should really be proud of how you look.

Your natural hair is nice, you don’t have very defined curls but you still have some nice waves. I also think your hair looks much better in its natural state, so much more volume! Don’t feel bad about what the people at school think, everyone prefers different things and you are going to get people who love your hair straight and others who love it curly so just go with what you like.

I use the Shea Moistures line many of their products keep my hair feeling nice and soft.

Ok, freak out over. But seriously, embrace your curls! I think they give you so much personality.

If you're looking for cruelty-free products, I highly recommend Aubrey Organics. <3 Shea Moisture is good too.

Do you know your hair's properties (porosity, texture, etc)? That's me with my best pigeon friend, Boss, who sits on my shoulder whenever he sees me. Such a good bird <3 He follows me everywhere. This is five days without washing. When I type it out it sounds repulsive!

That was while I was camping, that was three days without a good wash.

And lastly, here's me at the airport, coming back from America! That's washed the night before and dried in a bun.
You have beautiful hair! I agree your curls look like Shakira's And it's not unusual at all for curlies to go that long without washing. Shampoo can be very drying to curls - have you considered trying a shampoo free method? You might find that it helps reduce some of the dryness/frizz. You might want to also leave some conditioner in your hair to help with moisture and curl definition. Fine hair generally likes protein, and keeping a good balance of protein and moisture is important to help your curls look their best. I also think a gel or jelly type styling product will help give definition and eliminate frizz. I prefer the more natural products - I agree that Shea Moisture is a good brand. I also like kinky curly curling custard as a styler - it gives me good definition/frizz control without making my hair crunchy - but it does have a bit of a learning curve to figure out the right amount and application that works best. I like to use it in dripping wet hair - if I apply it to just damp hair, it feels sticky/producty. Hopefully some of that helps - let us know how things go

My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!

Do you have Target or Walgreens? That's where I find the SheaMoisture products. I love it! I used it for a deep treatment last week & got super results. And your curly hair is way prettier than your straight hair.

Hmm...I've read that it's hard to get the same products in Canada that we have here in the US. But here's a link to a thread I found in the swap board for Canada curlies - there are some Canada based websites mentioned where you can order a lot of products geared for natural or curly hair without having to pay international shipping. I have no idea if any of them carry Shea moisture, but you should be able to find some other good, natural, cruelty-free products to try. Here's the link to the thread: http://m.naturallycurly.com/curltalk....php?p=1379829
You may also want to consider looking through the Canada swap board to see if there are some products you want to try that someone is getting rid of. HTH!

I hope you find the right combination that you need for your hair to be at its best! You have lovely hair, nice curls, and there's so much you can do to help with frizziness and definition. Have you considered sulfate free shampoos? (has someone said this already?)

However, I am here to ask...

How on earth do you have a pigeon friend??! And how do I get one? I want a pigeon to love me, and follow me where I go

Hm, no there's no Target or Walgreens in Canada. I'll look around to see if I find some.
And about the pigeon friend, I'm a pigeon rescuer, in fact - today is the anniversary of getting my first pij, two years ago. So of course, I chill out with them a lot. Eventually, they get used to you (I don't know how they don't find it weird that I kidnap their injured friends), and there you have a pigeon friend! I do anything from a quick syringing to surgery.

I'm in Canada too, so I feel your pain on lack of product I have been using TiGi products (which are full of 'cones, but not sulfates, and they don't test on animals as far as i know) You could also try Suave products, if you are out West here like me, Save On has them. Many people here co-wash with Suave. L'Oreal also has has a line of shampoos and conditioners without sulfates, called EverStrong, EverPure, EverSleek and etc. They also have a co-wash product called EverCreme. Every pharmacy across Canada has them. Save-On also has Renpure Argan Oil shampoo and condish, as well as other organic items. Rexall Drugstore in the West of Canada has Abba pure lines and Aubrey Organics.

You have lovely hair, it has the same curl pattern as mine I see *nothing* wrong with your hair - I agree with other poster that people just like different things, that is the only reason they commented on your straight hair.

You can be who you are, and people will still love you anyways Let your freak flag fly! I did note the pigeons don't care a jot what you look like - maybe you can take a page from their book you are a lovely young girl with lovely hair, eyes and smile. You have it all!

My hair officially hates protein Once a month is enough!
Currently a fan of TiGi products, (rock on, TiGi Curlesque styling creme!) but that will soon change - I am a self-avowed product junkie! Yay!
BIG fan of supersoaker method - thanks Rudeechick!
You are so pretty!! I love your hair both ways but your wavy curls are very unique and beautiful. Like others suggested, i would say a nice leave in and gel might be helpful but never be ashamed of your pretty natural texture!
