Thoughts on going short...
I've been growing out my hair but I don't think my hair looks great long. It's fine and I don't have tons of it so as it gets longer, it looks scraggly. (I'm also way overdue for a cut so perhaps a good trim would help with shape/volume). If I fluff it up and scrunch it, I get volume but then it looks frizzy and poofy. So, I'm thinking about a drastic change. Short!
For those of you who were brave enough to get a short cut or even a pixie, were you happy with it? Did you regret it? I'm just afraid I'll have helmet head or it'll look like Annie! I like that I can always put it in a bun when it's looking extra bad but maybe with a great shorter cut I won't need to put it up. Should I go for it?

I think you can try out some nice shape without giving up on length, to see how much you like it, and go shorter only if you are sure to give that step.
I look like annie now But I knew what I was going into I hope I overcome this awkward phase soon.

Aw, Kelly and Cuban - you both have pretty hair!
I have had short bob cuts in the past, they rock - because you can either have them sleek and straight, or you can have a head full of curls. Short is great, because it can do so many things. Short curly bob cuts are cute! I loved mine when I had it!
End of the day, all that is important is that you like your cut and hair and feel comfortable in it. Maybe try looking at many different cuts on line before you decide? Research is always good!

Have you gone to livecurlylivefree.com? For $20, you can have your hair type analysed I will be doing that next week, tired of wondering if I am right. Many experienced curlies here have it done, and said it made all the difference!

Yeah, I've been there, and I would love to do it, but! they say they would send an email with instructions on how to take and send via mail the sample. Happens that I live in the caribbean (Dominican Republic), and I would like to know what is that they make you do, to make sure I would be able to do it properly from here since you can't trust the post office. It doesn't work as it should (imagine my 4yo niece sent 3 stones from her new home backyard in NJ to my mom -her grandma- in a letter, they felt there was something in there maybe thinking it would be valuable or jewelry IDK!, she received it opened and the stones missing :-/) I need to send it via courrier like Fedex or UPS. Shopping online require certain logistic for me. I pay for an adress in Florida and then they flight it to me, but Im not sure how to SEND something.
When they send you the instructions, would you tell me how is it? to see if it is worth it for me.
Also, I want to know if they ask you for different strands since I have coarser hair on top.
Sorry Cuban!!! I know this is your thread and I still think you might want to go slowly with the cut

I just sent in my sample a couple of weeks ago and they basically need about 20-25 hair total from all over your head (they tell you which areas so they capture any differences in hair around your head that way). You put that in a small ziplock bag and that's about it.

I've been wearing my inverted, curly bob for 4 1/2 years. It's the first time in my curly life (35+ years), that I feel that I have a style. When I was younger, my hair was dense. Age, thyroid and a medication that I take has thinned it out a lot. I felt that it looked scraggly, too.
IMHO, unless your hair is fabulous--more is not better.

My hair is too coarse and dense to go short. I did go really short about eight years ago, pre-CG days, yet it was awful. I have a very curly spot in the back canopy which needs length to tame it. I know I am not sporting the best look now since I wear it back daily but it is more manageable for me. It seems the longer it gets the better I can manage it.
I think a gradual change to shorter hair is the best approach. Maybe you can get a cut that is still long enough to pull it back, yet short enough to give you an idea if shorter hair would work.

So I ended up going drastic. It's short! Can't put it in a ponytail short. I found a deva stylist and talking to her I knew she "got it" so I let her be creative. It's drying now as I type. It looks a lot fuller, healthier and definitely more styled. I'll report back how happy I am once its fully dry and I've played with it.

I think finer thinner hair tends to look better short, whether it's straight or curly. I know we obsess over long hair, but there is nothing beautiful or sexy about scraggly hair...always reminds me of those women on make over shows who have the ugliest split end ridden hair, but insist on keeping it long just because.
I'm glad you had the guts to do what you thought might be right. Either way it grows back!

We do tend to be kinda obsessed with length. I also never wanted to believe that I couldn't do super long hair as I got older. But I used to have hair to my waist...it's shorter now...and I look younger. I had it even shorter before and I looked even younger. No idea why . Not to mention it's easier to deal with. I will always need enuff to play with and lots if movement. But I'm thinking of going back up to shoulder length again. Congrats on the new 'do. Any pics?

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free, maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.

I got home, washed out the cones and applied my products. I didn't like the way my hair felt when I left the salon but I must admit she did the best job of drying my hair curly of all stylists I've been to. My hair is drying now, again, so we'll see if I like it even more. It is more versatile -- I can def play with it with clips, all back, big and voluminous etc. All I could do with my longer hair was messy buns which I did, a lot!
Thanks for your input. I agree with you guys, longer hair is not necessarily better especially with fine or low density hair. Now I have to figure out how to sleep since I can't pineapple anymore!!!

That looked great.
My only gripe is not being able to pull it up or back shorter so if I get up and run out I always have to wet and do my hair first

Wow, that looks great, Cuban-curl-E! If I thought my fine, thin hair could look that good short, I'd cut it in a minute! Right now it's shoulder-length with zero style or shape.

Curly hair is so temperamental. I found a shorter cut that is super cute...but I know my hair at that length would never have that kinda curl formation. I get less curl the shorter I go.

Thanks guys. Very sweet of you all. I'm having second thoughts though and worried about what this will look like in the morning!! Aghh!!!!
Pros: hair didn't take 5+ hours to dry and I don't need to clip roots for volume.
Cons: can't pineapple, can't put hair up if its really humid/windy out. Guess I'll be looking into hats. Haha
