What Would My Hair Look Like Short?

I don't know what to do with my hair anymore. I'm getting really tired of styling it, and I don't think it looks good anymore. It's so boring and I want change. Not only that, but it's dry and damaged, extremely thick, and my scalp is always itchy. I can't even reach it to wash! My hair's not shiny, it's not great, it's just there, and I kind of want it gone.

I've wanted to grow my hair out long in hopes that it would stop being a pyramid and because I think it would look nice, but that's an impossible task seeing as it breaks before it lengthens. Now, I'm looking for short hair that's a little longer than a pixie. Like a Carey Mulligan or Michelle Williams length.

I'm just so frustrated by it, and I don't know what to do. I guess I'm open to suggestions about what I should do to make the curls look nicer, but I'm very interested in cutting it short and starting again. Will it look terrible? What do you know from experience or think?

My biggest concern is that it'll keep a curl and I'll look like a newborn (something I don't need considering I'm 20 and everyone thinks I'm 15/16. I'm still asked for ID at rated R movies and to buy M video games!). I also feel like growing it out will be a disaster, but I've had shorter curly hair before, and it doesn't look hideous... once it reaches my chin.

Thank you for any help!

Evangi, maybe try this? Hollywood Hair Virtual Makeover - Celebrity Hairstyles Try-On Tool - InStyle.com I think you can put a pic of yourself on there and then see what styles would look good on you - if nothing else, it looks like a fun game to play :)

I think you are such a lovely young girl, so likely no matter what style you choose, it will look nice ;)

the 'pyramid' comes from one length hair, it gets too heavy at the bottom. so layers, long layers, keep the pyramid away.

you would look good in a short haircut, or maybe chin length, or just a few inches off... so whatever you think you'd like to try. always bring as many pictures as you can to stylist so you are both on the same page! and make sure the layers are long rather than short.

post pics after your cut!!!

You hair will definitely keep it's curl when short. Make sure you go to a stylist you trust! You might not be able to go quite as short as you'd hoped, but still get a change you'll be happy with.

Whether you cut your hair or not, it's a good idea to get better acquainted with your hair's properties (porosity, texture, etc). Check out: Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics It'll take some experimenting to figure out what products and techniques work best for your hair, but it'll save you a lot of time and stress later! Good luck. :)

I think your hair will be very curly short, and might be difficult to manage.

I think you should cut a few inches off and have some long layers cut into it.

I second everything everyone has said in this post. :) I had short curly hair a few summers ago and I LOVED it. Curlies can definitely go short. I recommend using the "Salons" feature up there to find a good curly stylist. It makes a huge difference. I think shoulder length or a little past chin would be good for you. Either way I think some of your ends look damaged, like you said, so a haircut is the way to go.

To cut down on volume you want to increase clumping. I think there are a couple threads floating around on here about that, but what is your hair routine like when you style your hair? I find that not combing my hair after the last rinse in the shower is super important to help the curls clump together. Then I smooth my product on in sections. It's different for everyone of course though.

Also, are you doing moisturizing or protein treatments on your hair? The first will help moisturize, and maybe tone down the volume a little, and the second is essential for damaged hair.

Good luck. :) def post pics if you cut it!
