CG Method Questions/General Curly Questions
Hey
I have straightened my hair for the past two years and have quite recently decided I want to embrace the inner curl.
Curly-haired people mostly have dry hair from what I hear around the forums but annoyingly enough I have oily curly flat annoying hair. It
only gets only after two days or if I use the wrong products though. Here are my questions.
- Will the CG Method still make my hair clean and nice and soft?
- Will it make tighter or looser curls?
- What conditioner would you recomend?
- Will this work for me?
That's all my questions so far.
Thank you

- Will the CG Method still make my hair clean and nice and soft?
Yes! There will be an adjustment period anywhere from 2-4 weeks. You mentioned you have oily hair and you may have to deal with that before your scalp stops producing excess oil. As you stop removing the oil with shampoo, your scalp will eventually equalize.
- Will it make tighter or looser curls?
Since you have been straightening for the past two years, I predict that over time you are going to see curlier hair. This is just because heat damage naturally removes elasticity from the hair so it curls less. Also your hair may have changed during the last two years, so as fresh hair grows out from the root... who knows?
- What conditioner would you recommend?
Sally's beauty supply GVP matrix biolage conditioning balm - if you have thin hair this may be too much moisture though
Kenra moist conditioner (from ULTA) - has lots of protein for your damaged hair
Tressemme Naturals conditioner (from drugstore) - medium moisture, good slip
Hope that helps!
- Will this work for me?
I think so. But not everyone loves the CG method. Try it and see

I can also add that I had nasty oily hair with shampoo - I mean wash in morning an oily by late afternoon. Now I use a cleanser once a week or so and WO in between and I am still surprised how well just water cleans my hair!

My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)
Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.

I should probably correct myself, I'm not really oily, I'm just not a dry curly and I'm kind of oily-prone.
Thank you for the information I have two more questions though and if no one minds. I just want to cover all my bases.
- Do you apply the conditioner like you would shampoo?
- Is there a certain way it has to be done?

Livecurlylivefree.com has the best explanation of co-washing I've seen anywhere, in terms of the technique and such.
I also tend to get oily grimy roots, and while CG didn't eliminate it, it did seem to make it better (part of this is that I do intense martail arts 3-5 days a week for 2-3 hours a day). The important thing to remember is that there are countless ways to tailor CG to work for you (and that doesn't even count the realm of "modified CG").
I would recommend using a very light conditioner to co-wash and a richer conditioner to use as a traditional rinse-out conditioner. My personal favorite for co-washing is VO5 Vanilla Mint Tea.
If co-washing doesn't work for you (and it doesn't work for everyone), you also have the option of a cleansing conditioner (like Deva No-Poo or Curl Junkie Daily Fix) or a low-poo (sulfate-free shampoo- tons of options). Many people, especially with finer textured hair, will switch between these three options as needed.

I spread the conditioner on a section of my scalp. Then I use my fingerpads to scrubs at the scalp. But after learning to conditioner wash, this is how I use my ocassional sulfate free shampoo. I think the most important thing is to be thorough. Oh and don't use your fingernails.
I actually made a video on my co-washing method:

My 14 year old has oily scalp and curly hair. I had her on some high powered shampoo to try to fix the oily. Last week my girls and I started CG/mod-CG. Due to her oily scalp I had her use a L'Oreal sulfate-free shampoo instead of co-washing, and then Tresemme Naturals conditioner. I noticed a difference immediately for her. She has gone 3 days between washings and still her roots are not greasy. She is having the best results of the three of us. She pretty much just runs her fingers through her hair in the morning and she is good. I am most happy about the lack of oiliness and hope that helps her forehead clear up soon too.

This was my experience as well. Happy to hear it is working for her. You may find she will be able to WO wash a couple of times stretching those low-poo washings out a little more. It will depend a little on your water (hard, soft, etc) and how thorough she is - it takes a little more manual effort with WO - but it can work surprisingly well. A year and a half ago I never would have believed my hair oily hair would wash up well with just water. At any rate - I'm glad it's working and I bet it will make a difference with her forehead skin, too.

Thanks, I'll watch them
Thanks bjsch Tresemme Naturals is the one I was actually going to try, I read 6 pages of reviews on it!
Hope its alright if I ask one last question?
-How greasy does this make your hair at the start in the transformation period? I'm a older teenager so I still go to school and as you said the transformation period takes 2-4 weeks and I won't have that much time off until next summer. I have 11 days at the Christmas Holidays but I'm just wondering is it noticable or would I be able to wear my hair to school?

I hope someone chimes in that has oily hair. I have a dry scalp, so I have no idea. But I had an idea- What you could do at school though is just bun your hair and wear a large headband. You could also use some baby powder to disguise the oil.
