Curls and the Army
I am in the Army and I just learned about the Curly Girl Method and will be starting it as soon as my products arrive in the mail. I just have a couple questions though. I have long hair and because I am in the Army I have to wear my hair up while in uniform. I have read that you shouldn't use a brush your hair or wear it too tight in a ponytail but I was wondering what pointers ya'll may have for someone in my situation. What can I do to make sure my curls still get healthier and back to their natural shape while maintaining Army standards?
First I just wanted to say (especially in honor of Veteran's day yesterday) thank you for your service :)
As far as the CG method and putting your hair up, the main thing to remember is to be as gentle to your hair as possible, to avoid breakage and frizz. I'm not sure what the rules are in terms of how you're hair has to be put up, but you may be able to still do much of the same hair style you do already, but using different tools (for example, cloth covered hair bands instead of regular elastic bands). Wearing your hair in a ponytail is fine, you just don't want to pull it too tight from the roots. If you can tell us the specific requirements for having your hair up, maybe some people can suggest specific styles/tips.
As far as brushing is concerned, you want to avoid brushing your hair when it's dry (again, because this can cause breakage and frizz). The best time to detangle your hair is when its wet and is covered with conditioner, and most curlies prefer to use either their fingers or a wide tooth comb.
