What makes this gel sticky?

So... I've had this gel for about a week now. I noticed that this gel is really sticky as compared to DevaCurl Light Gel. For the life of me, I can't see what makes AIF a sticky product. I keep forgetting to try and add a bit of water to make it less sticky as I find it a bit hard to distribute the product through my hair. But bearable as is, probably won't buy again. Though, I will give it credit since it doesn't contain glycerin which the previous gel contained. With our dew points being low lately, I was able to see less frizz (though still there).

Aussie Instant Freeze Gel

Additional things to do very soon/or have noticed lately:
* Find new conditioner; why is it so hard to find one without silicones?! Trying to find something CG to minimize build up since I have hard water. I am nearing the end of my conditioner though. I MAY consider GVP CB.

* Which leads me to another thing, I don't think my low-poo is cutting it anymore. Need something to remove the icky build up. I MAY consider Ion Color Defense Clarifying Shampoo. (I was at Sally's the other day to get nail brush and checked out lots of products so still checking ingredients for CG-friendlies factor, still not done! I totally forgot about Sally's. Price seems reasonable though I STILL want to try out some products from the CJ line.)

* Drying time is driving me insane! It has always taken me so long for it to air dry. Still on the hunt to find a diffuser (once I do, will bring my hair dryer to make sure it fits) in hopes to speed up my drying time. I suspect that the hair is weighed down with the water still in my hair. Plus, it is cold out...

* My curls seems... lazy as of late. Not sure if our hard water is contributing to that (icky when I touch top of my head to feel it being a bit waxy). From tons of keyword searching (can you say ?) , seems it is recommended to do a protein treatment, yes? That might be true since the previous gel did contain protein and the current one does not seem to have it (ingredients above).

AIF is protein and glycerin free. It's probably the high amount of hydroxyethylcellulose that's giving it the sticky feel. That's a gelling and thickening agent made from cellulose (found in cell walls of plants). Are you applying it to soaking wet hair? I use maybe a quarter size blob and rub between my hands, then rake through my hair. Then I scrunch 'n pump to reform any lost curl before plopping.

For the lazy curls, try clarifying first. They can happen because of buildup or because of overconditioning, so go with the easy fix first, then move to more "drastic measures". Keep in mind if it's turning wintry there, the dewpoints are dropping and curls will tend to be less perky simply because of the lower moisture in the air. Try a pt next if clarifying doesn't perk up your curls. Even some protein heavy conditioners can double as light pt's depending on your hair.

Thank you Geek_Chic! Ah so that's what it does.

Hmm, as far as how wet, I would say that I get out of shower, dry myself off, get dressed as soon as I can, then go to the other bathroom to style my hair. Maybe not wet enough? The size that I squeeze out is about a quarter size though I only scrunched them in. I tried plopping and found that it was only giving me more frizz (I varied from 15-20 minutes to 45 minutes). Then again, plopping was with the other gel before I knew what glycerin does in low dew point... Could be worth revisiting again.

Alright, will see about finding a time to go to Sally's and see about getting that Ion. Hopefully that will give me a bit more oomph. If not, what rec's would you have for a PT? I didn't think of a protein rich conditioner. Do not actually have any on hand, don't believe so.
