This weekend, I found myself teaching my SIL how to do my niece's hair. While her hair is fairly straight, she gets massive tangles. She's medium to fine, porous, and very dense. Her hair is much more dense than mine. It's about waist length. She's ten.

I had to cut out two mats that wouldn't detangle. I picked up some products for her, got her a detangling comb (SIL had been using a brush) and a satin bonnet.

It took a good half an hour to detangle. I taught my SIL how to section the hair and detangle each section and how to re-wet the new sections since her hair dries so quickly.

I used my Knot Today on her and gave her a bottle to take home. I picked up a Shea Moisture for regular conditioning and a cheap Suave with some silicone for a leave-in. I think some cones might help her.

They can pick up the Suave and SM where they live, but no Kinky Curly. She's not the type to order online.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced detangler (good slip for really tangly porous hair)that can be found at Wal-Mart, Meijer or Walgreens. Thanks!

No problem! Garnier was OK for me, doesn't work as well as some other stuff I use, but for the price it's not a bad option. I like Aussie best though!

Johnson's No More Tangles is a great old standby. Contains dimethicone, but has tons of slip.

A non-silicone option (that I currently use for detangling my hair before I wash it) is SM Coconut and Hibiscus spray.

Garnier always makes my face break out and my hair frizzy. Johnson's leaves a gummy feeling in my kids hair.

I know I've used one with good slip but I just can't think of what it would have been.

Maybe Hair Insurance, or Pantene.

Leave ins always make my hair sticky.

Tresemme Nat's and vo5 Shea cashmere both have decent slip for me - and she has similar properties to mine.

She should think about sealing her hair. Mineral oil would be my best suggestion.

J&J detangled is great. Really any baby conditioner should do the trick, and of she's not CG it shouldn't cause any problems with cones, provided she's using "regular" shampoo.

Garnier Triple Nutrition is the best I've used for detangling.

Have you looked into other potential reasons her hair is tangling? Is it at optimal health? I find that hair often tangles at night....is the girl sleeping with loose hair, or is it wrapped or braided? (braiding for the night works really well for those with long hair, plus on some people makes nice waves the next day when released).

Her hair is porous because it's long (waist/hip length)and always down. It feels sort of stripped.

I did get her a hat, and she wore it over the weekend. It seems to help.

Sealing just isn't going to happen. I'll be lucky if conditioning gets kept up with.

I'll send a bottle of other options out there to see if those work. For me, nothing comes close to Knot Today's slip, so I'm stumped for a good substitute.

Would Sally's products be a possibility? Or is this a drugstore only scenario?

If conditioning is not going to happen (which I don't understand - aren't they spending 5 times as long dealing with tangles as it would take to condition/seal??), then they should really consider cutting it.

I hear some of the Yes to... condishes have good slip, but can't say from experience.

Paul Mitchell Detangler is good (from my pre-cg days), and often you can find it at drug or department stores.

It's pretty much Walgreens, Wal-Mart and Meijer.

Neither parent is up on hair care since they have no maintenance hair. But, my brother is against cutting her hair short. It makes it hard.

I hope they keep up in the conditioning since she does needs lots of it.

there's short and there is reasonably long that is easier to maintain and keep healthy. waist length with tangled, stripped hair cannot be attractive. would he consider somewhere between shoulder and bra strap length? what would your niece like? (it is her hair).

I really don't understand some people. They're determined to have long hair or have their daughters have long hair, but have zero interest in maintaining it. Long unhealthy hair is just more of a bad thing. I don't get it at all.

I think detanglers are so subjective. I don't find most popular CG conditioners to have enough slip for detangling my hair. The best detangler for my 3b curls is Aussie Moist Conditioner and it's really inexpensive. Target sells the large bottle with a pump for around $5-$6. Before I discovered NC.com, I used Pantene conditioner and found it to work really well. The Pantene can be found in a large-size bottle, as well.

I think Yes to Cucumbers has pretty good slip. And it's around 18oz maybe? I can't remember if you can buy it at Wal-Mart or Wal-greens though. Target for sure.

I don't understand why they are so stubborn. I have a ton of hair and had it that long when I was a kid. I finally got tired of it but didn't want a drastic cut so my mom would cut off a couple inches every couple weeks so it would gradually get shorter.

Also, your niece is 10 so she should be taking some responsibility for her own hair. At that age, I was taking showers, washing and conditioning my own hair and brushing (I know, the horror!) it afterwards. Sometimes my mom would help with tangles but I didn't have many.

don't know if this will help at all, but Jeepycurls had posted that using an ACV/water rinse between the shampoo and the conditioner,and leaving it in before conditioning, would help with the detangling. I tried it and it worked really well. Cut my detangling time in half to about 5 mins (I have super tangled hair for some reason). My hair is also very long. The other thing is, I tried HE Honey I'm Strong condish, and it worked pretty well too, especially with the ACV rinse before hand. Hth your niece has lovely hair! And so nice of you to help her take care of it...
