Default For those who use some cones..

Ok. I'm currently coneless, but am considering letting a few in. For those mod-CGers on here, what cones are you willing or unwilling to use? In your condish, or styling products, or both?
How often do you 'poo, and is it with coco betaine or sls? Do you/can you go between poo's with co-washing or very low-poo? How long can you go before having to clarify it out??

I'm really more looking into amodimethicone (since it doesn't build up and targets damage), but might consider others.

So fill me in on your thoughts! I currently only use water soluble cones, and low poo w cocobetaine about once a week or so. And I clarify with low sls once a month at most.

Tia!!

Dimethicone and dimethiconol are an absolute no no. I have had bad experiences with them when I was using Dove.

I use Herbal Essences range of conditioners as rinse outs, co wash. They have bis amino propyl dimethicone. This one is scientifically modified so that it DOES NOT cause build up but it is not water soluble. Its listed as the 6th or 5th ingredient. it doesn't weigh my hair down though.

Few of the conditioners in Garnier Fructis range has amodimethicone at the bottom of the ingredient list so it didn't bother me.

basically if there are no silicones in the top four ingredients, then I don't mind.
I shampoo with SLES once in one or two weeks, but I dissolve it in a mug of water before pouring it through my hair and then lather it in. it cleans well enough. I also avoid all cones in shampoo.
Vinegar also rids the hair of the light build up I get.
My hair isn't weighed down by these silicones.
Sorry my reply is so long..

Thanks!! That's very helpful!

I too stay away from dimethicone. Ick! It makes my hair like straw. Waxy straw.

I'm am not a curly chemist so I either would look to see if there were too many in there or none. I know the conditioners I use tho. Aussie moist has always been good to me. That was actually the first coney conditioner I used after I gave up on strict cg. I had waist length super curly hennaed hair. I was in the shower crying after being in there a half an hour with some cg conditioner and still not being able to get thru it. It was Aussie moist that saved me. I use herbal essence HIM too and that's pretty good. The new Garnier triple nutrition can build up on me after a bit tho.

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free, maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.

I've found that where I use cones in my routine has a bigger impact on how my hair feels than which cones I use. I can use cones in styling products without any issues (even dimethicone- MorrocanOil Curl Defining Cream is one of my favorite non-CG products). But my hair hates cones in my cleansers or conditioners. Even amodimethicone. First day my hair looks and feels great, but it's all downhill from there.

I use all 'cones, I actually love how dimethicone makes my hair feel. However, I try not to use products that are almost entirely made of cones, or have them really high on the ingredients list. Also, I don't use 'cones in my shampoo, ever! I only use them SPARINGLY in my conditioners, then however I want to in my stylers.

The products I use most are the Joico Deep Treatment, Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Balm, Kenra Styling Cream, TIGI Curlesque Curl Anplifier, and some Frederic Fekkai balm in a green tube -- that one is coney-er than I like, so I use it sparingly, but WOW does it make my hair soft!!

I wash my hair with the Renpure shampoo in the red bottle. It's a low-poo with coca. betaine and it seems to remove all buildup! It's very gentle and I haven't had any issues with my hair getting dry. It's actually very soft.

Interesting, Corrina! I would have thought it would be the other way around, since styling cones sit on your hair and don't get rinsed away like in cleansers or conditioners....

Hmm.... Much to think about. I don't know if I'll take the plunge, but want more info since I was considering it!

Eta: Steph, too, with cones in products! Interesting...

I do a mix of low poo and co-wash, and clarify on occasion, so it probably wouldn't be a big problem for me build-up wise.

Do you find cones help you retain moisture? That's my biggest issue with my hair, especially when going for 2nd day hair. Darned porosity.

Yup, cones help a lot with moisture retention for me. They lock out humidity AND dry air, which is nice. They keep my hair moisturized and soft, so I only have to wash once a week

So wait... You only wash once a week? Do you co-wash or re-wet in between then? There's no way my hair would make it a full week.

To be fair, I have very thick, dry hair and a dry scalp. So a) my scalp doesn't produce much oil to begin with and b) whatever oil I do have, my hair soaks up and loves, hahaha. My roots start to feel oily at the one week mark, and at that my curls start to look frizzy/unruly, so I wash. My hair HATES rewetting without a full wash, so spritzing with water to restyle is not an option for me

HOWEVER, 'cones do a great job extending my wash time because of how soft my hair feels (I used to wash around day 4 because my hair would reel rough/tangly) and they make my hair more slippery and smoother and better at retaining some semblance of order/style. They also make my hair shiny and block out the elements of humidity and dry air fairly well.

I do also lose some curl, I get the beachy hollywood wave look rather than my 2C/3A combo from the CG method. That said, I use some heavy products designed for straightening/smoothing AND I rake them through, so. Your curl-loss may be less than mine if you keep a curl-enhancing method of applying your products. Plus, you were looking more towards the A-cone. I like dimethicone & such, which I believe is heavier.

So I'm assuming you use sulfates then once a week? Which poo?
What about PT/DT's?

Too bad, the medley formed a gross film and my hair was severely dry at the end of the day. Darn, so many products with cones I wanna love!

Don't use sulfates, just coca. betaine in my Renpure red bottle shampoo. It's a low-poo with coca betaine second on the ingredients list, so it cleans very well! I never have any buildup, yet I also find it doesn't strip at all.
I don't PT because I have very coarse hair! I can use products with keratin, though, and my hair likes that. For a DT, I use the Joico Balm in a blue squeezy tube. It's heavy but my hair loves it! Like I said, I have coarse hair that looooves moisture. Cones help make it smooth and shiny, rather than horse hair-like.

I try to use products that are a good mix between natural and cone-y. Most of my products have a good bit of oil and such in them, too.
