It's not just you. I have only been CG for a couple months but I am having the same issue with my roots, sorta flat and really strange parting. I've noticed with my hair that if I use a claw clip it ends up much better. I've seen a few different clipping techniques around the web, but I think to get the proper clipping technique you have to know what your hair does. For example, my hair has a strange part down the back. It goes from my part, down the left where a curl sweeps to the right side. SO I try and clip that section to be straight down as it dries.
It also seems to work best for me if I clip at 75% dry. That way I know where the curls are going that specific day.
Any of the "tried and true" clipping things havent worked for me yet. So I just do my own thing.
