Share How You Found Out What Your Hair Hates

I just figured out why four different products didn't work for my hair after a year and half of trying new products. It feels so enlightening! (OK, maybe that's dramatic, but it feels great to finally figure it out.)

My hair hates Aloe Vera (aka Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice), the second ingredient in Giovanni Direct Leave In, CJ Curl Fuel, and CJ Rehab, and the third ingredient in CJ CCCC. It finally donned on my that the aloe vera was probably the reason each one of those products felt drying and rough on my hair.

So far that's the one thing my hair has truly rejected.

So tell me curlies, how did you come to find out which ingredients your hair doesn't like? Did it take months/years, or did you wake up and smell the coffee faster than I?

Plus: here's a pic of my hair now, since I haven't update my signature in a year. Forgive the bright eye makeup, I had just got home from a holiday party.

Interesting topic!

My hair HATES peppermint. It dramatically dries my hair out. Even if it's low on the ingredients list.

My hair also dislikes glycerin. Also depends on the weather of course, but mostly glycerin is bad.

You have beautiful hair btw!

My hair doesn't really hate olive oil, or argan oil, or products that include these, but it's very easy for my hair to feel greasy and weighed down. I no longer do deep treatments with oils as a base (i only add a teeny bit), i learned not to the hard way oily clean hair on a date is not something i want to repeat ever!

I'd been using 'cones and detergents on my hair my whole life cuz I knew nuthin 'bout reading ingredients (other than mineral oil & petrolatum). I ain't kno nuthin 'bout payin 'tention to my hair's behavior....until this past May.

I had got braids and was askin' people what I should DC with when they come down. Someone told me "Just olive oil." I was so stunned that I went on a Googling/YouTubing spree and learned the truth behind the success of so many black hair care product lines. I decided that my hair wasn't in the greatest shape NEway.....while it felt nice after conditioning, it wasn't really growing....... so why not change up my game and see what it does? I got rid of the 'cones and detergents and I liked what I was seein'.

PS: I had to use improper english cuz this was so serious to me!

I found out that my hair hates being sealed with coconut oil. I would always seal with coconut oil but my hair would always be dry and hard. When I switched to sealing with olive oil, my hair was soft and moisturized. Now I only use coconut oil for pre-wash treatments to prevent hygral fatigue.

I found out by trial and error.

Wheat and Quinoa protein. NEVER EVER AGAIN. Dry brittle straw.

Salt. It's been in every shampoo and conditioner, that was otherwise gentle, but totally wrecked my hair.

Honey makes my hair looks like it's having a static storm, no matter how small the quantity.

Waxes weigh my hair down and build up on my scalp. I'd have to clarify regularly if I used waxes in my hair.

My hair is ambivalent about Argan oil. It tends to stop working in my hair and my hair never gets used to anything. Strange.

Aloe, rosemary, lavender, and mint make my scalp itch and in worse case scenarios give me rashes. Same story for perfume-y synthetic fragrance.

My hair hates tea rinses. My hair feels extremely coarse and sticky. I'm never trying that again. Also I haven't figured out the relationship between dew points and humectants.
My hair also hates dimethicone. It weighes down my waves. I use it only when I use my flat iron.. Using coconut oil to seal gives me frizzies.. I mix it up with olive oil and it works great!

Apple cider vinegar. Made my hair feel like straw and cement. And the smell! You couldn't pay me enough to put that stuff anywhere near my head again.

This isn't a product, but my hair hates being diffused. It prefers air drying.

My hair hates aloe too. I actually got aloe gel, and when I put that stuff on my hair it made it rough to the point where I could hardy pull my hands through it. Also, it left my hair undefined and flat.

Also, my hair hate baking soda. No matter how little I use and how much I dilute it, baking soda just makes my hair terribly dry and frizzy.

well my hair hates cones and sulfates. it took me a little while to figure out ingredient lists but im pretty good now with that and so i just scan all the ingredients before i buy, when im happy with it i buy it/try it and take it from there. i try it a few times bfore i decided iif i hate it or not

my hair: 3c, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

I know my hair hates something when it become really dry and won't accept moisture. That is what cones and mineral oil do to me. I have to keep my hair buildup free. Also strong proteins make my hair like straw. My hair likes some things but only as mixtures. Aloe is okay in formulation but not good alone. Coconut oil has to be sparingly or i get strawlike hair.
Love the responses. I just recalled that my hair hates avocado. I think they are delicious, but my curls just feel rough when I'm trying to work one through my hair.

My hair hates devacare line to be honest i dont know what ingredients cause the issue n i dont want to find out again. I wrote a rant on here after trying it the first time its called "i am enraged with devacare" someone from the reply mentioned it might be the wheat protein. But my hair was so matted, rough and brittle i thought i had to bc again! And it took weeks to revert. Awful period of my natural hair journey

My hair hates aloe, honey, magnesium sulfate and olive oil. The ones in bold NEVER AGAIN. I found out through trial and error. Aloe is just ick and honey makes my hair a tangled mess. Magnesium sulfate dries out and matts my hair like no other. Olive oil makes my hair greasy and crunchy yuck
