I just tried (yesterday) sealing with oil and my hair is such a disaster that I think I will remove it from my siggie! Maybe it will be useful for my cuticles....

Okay, when exactly are you using this mineral oil, and can it be used alone?
Update: Just tried a teeny tiny eeny bit of mineral oil on dry hair. Looks horrible! Greasy, limp, and slick, like I haven't washed it in days.Thumbs down. Thumbs waaaaaaaay down.
(Sorry if this sounds blamey. I should have known better. I get excited to try things. I'm a goon.)

Oh dear...I know what you mean about trying new things ASAP, I do it all the time but as far as I know, sealing with oil works when a few drops are used on top of your leave-in (while your hair is very damp) and then you add your gel on top.

[QUOTE=jsuzkelley;2092302]Hi greytmommy
I was just reading your original post, and wondering if glycerin could be causing your frizz. I have the AIA curling jelly, and I had to stop using it once the dews dropped below 20, as the glycerin would dry my hair out over the course of the day and result in frizz. My go to jelly styler right now has been Uncle Funky's Daughter curly magic - although I also still keep KCCC and SS CEJ in my rotation. These are all glycerin free.
I agree that maybe glycerin might be a trigger. I don’t really have the same issue, b/c I live in south FL. But I do seem to get the opposite effect. I use products with glycerin in them for my "winter" regime, which is like dews of 40-50..lol..But in the summer; when dews are over 70, I use glycerin free products...If I use products with glycerin in summer, it seems to cause CRAZY amount of frizz. I also have fine/med hair with low porosity and I could NOT seal with oil. It was HORRIBLE. It took months to get my hair back to original state. But maybe products with oil in them could help, like CCCCL or UFD CM. CCCCL can be used as a LI, styler, and refresher. I did use this when I went to NYC for thanksgiving. It did perform well there for me, but after few times of use; it would weigh my hair down..So I just needed to clarify with Giovanni 50:50 every few washes... Not sure if any of this helped, but good luck.

thanks guys!!! You have given me so much to try!
the AIA has been my go-to b/c it seemed to give me the most curl that didnt fall flat. the KCCC would give me curl, but it seemed to go flat at the end of the day.
I will try the sealing...I have been meaning to buy some grapeseed oil anyway...b/c have started the "oil cleansing method" for my face, and I wanted to switch to grapeseed from sunflower oil b/c it is better for oily acne prone skin.
I will do some DT too...I promise.

Oh dear! No, NEVER use MO on dry hair!!! Sealing is done while your hair is wet! I do it after adding LI, and before gel.
I have very long, dense hair, and I use 5-10 DROPS of MO. So go easy and build up or down from there.
The only oils I can use on dry hair (to refresh or smooth) are Grapeseed oil, jojoba, or SM Elixir. And even then it's a few drops rubbed into my palms or fingers and then smoothed into the curl.

I did! I rubbed a tiny bit on my hands and then scrunched into the heaviest part of my waves. It was still a disaster. I can't use leave-ins, either, so I guess sealing is just not for me.
Having good luck with vit. e oil on skin, though.

Are you low porous? Many who are don't like oils or sealing. (Tho you could use oil in a DT still, probably!)
Have you tried EVOO or EVCO?

ok, i sealed with a bit of sunflower oil, after LI and before products....about 6 drops for my short bob. I did EVERYTHING else exactly the same.
so here is what I did:
LI
6 drops sunflower oil scrunched in
spray homemade Espom salt solution/curl activator
AIA scrunched in then scrunch w/ MF towel
scrunch in LALSG
diffuse to 80% dry
Scrunch in a bit more LALSG w/ wet hands
diffuse a bit more
SOTC
So far my hair looks SO MUCH BETTER!!! The curls are there! THey havent been there in weeks it feels like. My hair does NOT look oily or gross...just normal. So we will see if the curls STAY throughout the day of playing with the kids and light cleaning....
i thought for sure the oil would make my hair a greasy mess.....EVCO always did. I do have pretty porous hair, so maybe your theory of fine, high porous hair can seal...

I don't know what I am (besides wavy), but I'm happy for greyt, who sounds thrilled.
Glad you found help, greyt!
As for me, so long as the wind's not blowing too hard, I can live with a little mousse, or nothing. I think my hair is of "the less you do, the better" type. Thanks, though

Hi Claudine I was just wondering if you've tried conditioner only styling? Might be something to try in the winter to help keep extra moisture in, without having to fuss with oils or other stylers.

I seal with oil and what always worked for me was to add a few drop to my hands that my palms shine when I rub it together and smooth it down my hair.. I always start with the ends because it is usually the part that needs it the most and more is distributed there less than the roots, so that it'd be less oily. Sealing doesn't mean oiling your hair just adding a sheen.. Also, some oils are heavier than others. Like coconut and olive oil are heavier than sunflower and sweet almond oil. Coconut oil always made my air feel crunchy because of the cool weather here, so I can't use it. Olive oil works but tends to make my hair feel weighed down or oily, though it doesnt really look like it, but I like it because it may also condition hair for it's penetrative properties. Sweet almond oil is just perfect for me though.

My hair was still curly when I went to bed last night! YAH!!!!!!!!!!! that hasnt happened in over a month.
I got a little bit of frizz from the wind and my neck of my sweater. I think my hair could maybe use a bit more oil next time. I was going to see if I could get second day hair today...but then I decided I was too lazy.
I also saw the Got2Be Kinkier spray gel, so I picked that up as well. Will give it a try to see if it boosts my curls.

I don't really know what this is. I think I saw a thread --- your thread? --- about it, but for some reason I got distracted and haven't read it. What is it?
