Question Hair help !

Soo, I moved a year ago (from the south to midwest).. and the problems began. I neverrr wore my hair curly when I lived in the south because I was so used to straightening it (CHI iron) and when it was curly it would just frizz and I figured there was nothing I could do about that. NOW that I live in the midwest (dryer climate) I reallyyy want to wear my hair curly, but I have a bunch of problems. . .

1. I can't wear it curly because it turns into a huge mess when it dries. (most of the curls are pretty defined when its soaking wet besides some frizz here and there)

2. Since I can't wear it curly I have to straighten it, BUT now when I straighten my hair it looks dry, brittle, and it won't move like it should... & my ends look TERRIBLE.

3. My hair started breaking off when I came here and it's just gotten shorter and shorter.

4. The lady that cut my ends about last month says my hair is damaged (it was straight) and that I need a protein treatment, BUT I did a porosity test and my hair stayed at the top (low porosity, so I should stay away from protein, right?).

I just wanna know...... Is my hair just dry, or is it actually damaged? IS it possible for my hair to be damaged AND have a low porosity? Any product suggestions? I'm LOST.

*sigh* Hair is so confusing. .

BTW: I've always been natural (no perms relaxers, etc.)

LiveCurlyLiveFree will give you a more accurate picture of your hairs properties. The analysis is reasonably priced. However is does sound like you have damage and the float test is not always reliable, so give protein a try By the way...Welcome To The Midwest!!!!

My fine/low porosity hair never met a protein it didn't like. I do at least one PT a week and use a lot of products with protein. Nothing will repair the heat damage, it may make it a little better.

I'm afraid if I do a protein treatment it'll mess my hair up though... I've heard of people doing it & it made their hair hard & messed up the curls :/. Ohh, this is a picture of my hair wet (before washing) Hair help !-imageuploadedbycurltalk1357225542.676426.jpg

You need to folliw a PT by a DC, this way your hair shouldn't get messed up

I am almost shure my hair is highly porous (I bleached it a lot, it dries fast and it behaves in humudity like high porosity hair), but according the float test my hair isn't porous. I think the test is not that accurate. And what's more: there are also low porosity curlies that like proteïn, and high porosity curlies that don't like it. So I think you have to give proteïn a try to know if you like it. In most cases, highly damaged hair is also highly porous.

I think the best thing that you can do, if you want to go back to curly hair, is take really good care of it. Hair that is once damaged, can not be reapaired. You can take good care of your damaged hair and let it look somewhat better, but you probably have to grow the damaged hair out. If you continue to straighten your hair, it probably is never going to change like the situation how it now is.

So, I suggest that if you really want to wear it curly, you have to get rid of your dead ends en take really good care of your hair. So, no or little heat, no or little sulfates, no or little chemical treatments and lots of conditioner (satin pillowcase optional) etc.

Good luck girl!

Bleached-damaged 3a hair. Fine, porous&dry, medium to high density. Goal: growing the painted hair out (I only do some highlights in the out grow every 3-4 months), and have long healthy hair till at least BSL when curly.

loves: CJ products, jessicurl rocking ringlets, proteïn, co-washing, leave-in conditioner, diffusing, air-drying, pineapple method.
hates: glycerin in low dews, bleaching too much

Experimenting with MSM&biotin on the moment

Consider a test patch. I just spot treated with Joico to see if it would make my hair hard and brittle. Seems to be fine even without the DT follow up. When I get around to a fuller treatment, I will only apply to my damaged areas though just to be safe.

Yes I often use the Aussie three min miracle when I go on trips because it is a small bottle and easy to pack. Mostly I use it for de-tangling and co-washing when I do use it. If your hair is badly damaged and dry I would suggest something a bit better than the Aussie deep conditioner. I alternate my deep treatments between the Shea Moistures Deep Treatment Masque, the Nexxus Humectress Deep Conditioner, the Macadamia Deep Repair Masque and I also use the Giovanni Deep Moisture Conditioner. These are my favorites right now. When my hair had heat damage I got a cut, stopped using heat, used oil and deep treatments once a week, and a long list of other tips you can find throughout this site. My hair is healthy and waist length now so it is possible to turn things around just hang in there!

Good luck.
