Why? Why? Why?

Can anyone tell me why my hair looks like garbage one day and fantabulous the next? I have debunked the following theories:

Product buildup
Correct product(s)
Humidity/dew point
Styling/drying technique

Today is Friday--it is rainy and windy. My 2nd-day hair today is bouncy, curly, full, and just amazing. Yesterday, a wash day, it was dry, sunny, with a relative humidity of about 59. Hair turned out amazing, full, bouncy, curly.

Going back to Tuesday, a wash day, a dry, sunny day, my hair was limp, dull, with poorly formed curls. By Wednesday, my 2nd day hair looked like a damp, dirty wrung out mop.

There is no pattern. Sometimes my hair looks amazing on wet days and crappy on dry and vice versa.

I use the exact same products every single time I wash, and I use all the exact same techniques. I have been noticing this for quite some time. WTH???? Yesterday, I even used a product that previously made my hair HORRIBLE last time I used it (so I thought). I almost sold it, it was so bad. I used it yesterday AND today and my hair is amazing. I'm so confused.

Hormones? I have noticed that sometimes I see smoke when I blowdry my hair, and it's on those days that my hair is amazing. What could it be? Some sort of naturally secreted oil that enhances the hair during ovulation to better attract a mate???
OK, I admit it.....I'm an alias! I wasn't born with the name Honeycurls!
Dood, get over it; there's no time limit on lurking.

I so busy runnin' allllllll over the place and ain't nobody chasin' me!
I wish I could Honeycurls, though I like your theory on attracting a mate.

Mine does the same. One wash day it is great, and it holds up well for 2 to 3 days but the next it is heavy and blah. I use the same products every time as well and today my hair seems heavy even though I used less product than normal. I personally think my hair enjoys messing with my mind.

**either that or it's in a state of shock today from the drop in temperature :-/

PS- Check your dryer, please. The last thing you need is to be attacked by a flying ball of fire.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

Haha, no, the smoke is coming from my hair when I have the dryer on its highest setting, and it only happens intermittently--and only those times when my hair turns out fabulous. I only use that setting when my hair is at its wettest. It's the kind of smoke I get if I unknowingly use a product with oil in it--which my hair HATES. It's from the substance being heated up, not from my hair burning. I can kind of smell it and feel it (the substance). I just don't know what it is. I just know that when it's not there, my hair SUCKS!

The hormone/ovulation theory really isn't that far-fetched. When we are ovulating, our bodies do many things to make us more attractive to the opposite sex. I'm pretty sure it's not a coincidence that I feel that I'm probably ovulating right now. It's such a dramatic difference from one time to the next, though, that I almost dread washing my hair and washing the awesomeness away. I might try to get 3 days out of this.

I have no answers for you, mine's the same. If I'm wearing my hair loose I use the same products and same techniques every time, yet some days are good and some are just awful. I have no idea why, no rhyme or reason to it.

Right???? I wish someone would consider this issue important enough for a research grant. I'm sure there's a simple explanation, which might turn the haircare product world on its ear...people spend millions upon millions for "clarifying" shampoos to remove product "buildup." I have a tub of Lush Big shampoo, and it's probably the harshest shampoo I've ever used--yet, my hair still has inconsistent results when I use it, and it clearly removes any alleged "buildup." Or those of us (basically every single one of us) who avoid or buy products because of ingredients they have or don't have. After what I've observed with my own temperamental hair, I don't think there's any validity to that either.

December 2011, I had the most amazing hair every day for the entire month. Suddenly in January 2012, it was like aliens came in the middle of the night and switched out my scalp with another. My hair was awful, no matter what I used or what the weather. I tried all kinds of new products trying to fix the problem or "remove buildup." Nothing worked, and I wasted so much money on useless products and my hair still looked like wet, stringy noodles--I experimented again with one of those products when I washed on Thursday--you know, the day my hair looked its most fabulous....

So, over the past year, I have observed my hair very closely in relation to products, humidity, styling method, and ovulation, and all indicators point to the fact that how it looks and feels has NOTHING whatsoever to do with which products I use. This is good news because it means that I can continue to use my $.78/bottle V05 Extra Body Conditioner as both cowash and rinse out conditioner forever. Humidity only plays a small role as well. I will still use the occasional finger dip of Lush Big because I love the fragrance and, as a cowasher, I love to scrub my scalp with the salt crystals. The salt didn't hurt my BKT, either, for anyone who is interested.
