I think most curlies in the 3B-3C, maybe even 3A if their hair is thick enough, can wear their hair either poofy (a side effect of brush or combing when dry) or leave it clumped/untouched and hanging in a downward position.
My bestfriend/first bf in middle school had shiny jet black hair that curled in the most artificial-perfect-frizz free-fairy tale looking way and it grew like a weed. His hair was half way down his back and he could cut it whenever and it would just grow back.
I think he washed his hair with body wash and rarely if ever conditioned it. If he were a girl everyone would think his hair was a weave/wig or that he spent his entire life caring for it and curling it.
Grew up thinking I had straight hair that was just messy and in need of a good brushing.
Discovered my true texture and transitioned to CG in April 2009.
Now I'm a 2c/3a using the DevaCurl line, and I'm finally developing a deeper love for my hair!
My theory is guys sweat a lot and they don't always wash as fanatically as gals do. I'm guessing *usually* this leaves them with hair that's in way better condition. They may also leave it alone more and therefore damage it less so it grows more readily. Just a theory though.
