Plopping questions...

I tried plopping last night for the first time with a turtle neck shirt.

I got out of the shower, wrapped my hair in a towel for a few minutes and tried to squish some water out, put some curling cream in, scrunched, and plopped it into the shirt. It actually is kind of comfy to wear!

Fast forward to 2.5 hours later I undid everything and my hair was still soaking wet and not particularly curly. I could have gotten more curl from just scrunching and blow drying.

Is this supposed to help dry your hair? Should I try a microfiber towel? Any particular brand/type? What did I do wrong?
I put product into soaking wet hair, then gently scrunch out the water excess with a MF towel or a t-shirt, etc. Then I actually scrunch a tiny bit more gel back into my ends.

I lay my plopping towel or tee onto the toilet seat (lid down, of course) and tip my head upside down. I sort of stack my curls then lower my head the rest of the way down so the top of my head touches the towel, then wrap the ends around the back and tie in place. (If its a towel I'm using its folded into a triangle for ease of wrapping. If its a t I use the sleeves to tie it.)

This sort of holds your curls in a scrunched position.

You need to use something that is 100% cotton, or is designed for this purpose (such as a MF towel.)

There is also such a thing as plopping for too long, too. 2.5hrs may be too much time in the plop for your hair.

I know for me I get my hair out of the plop, I gently re-scrunch with the plopping towel, then I will either air dry or diffuse halfway or so.

HTH!

So the plopping isn't supposed to help dry at all?
It does helps absorb excess water, especially if you use an MF towel, and that will make it dry more quickly out of the plop, but plopping itself is more for curl formation than drying.

Got it! Thanks for the tips. I'll run out on my lunch break today to see if Walmart sells microfiber towels. Then I'll try plopping again when I get home tonight!
2.5 hours is WAY too long. I've also plopped too long sometime. It increased drying time and made my hair less curly.

If I plop 15 to 20 minutes though drying time is greatly reduced and my curls are definitely enhanced.

I can do long plops (have even gone over night) but have to spritz with some water, scrunch, and then spritz with some spray gel if I do that.

My hair is so long (and porous) that I can get away with longer plops. I think they shorter your hair is (or perhaps the tighter the curls, too?) the less time you can plop.

Hm! My hair is really long too and I have 3A, but I really can't plop too long! Guess it depends on type of hair

Yeah, I think that's true, Aqua Lily! Like I said, for me I can only do a long plop if I add some moisture back in and hit it with some gel. And I still have times where I take the plop down and it's clear I left it on too long! Lol! I've just heard from others that the shorter you hair, the shorter the plop time it can tolerate.

But you are right! Everyone is different!

I wonder if there are hair properties that make a difference there. Hmm. I'm porous, so maybe that makes a difference? Idk! Interesting to ponder, tho!

@Jas76,

Yeah you're right, it is very interesting to ponder about what the cause could be!

It's probably hair properties (or maybe even humidity? I live in a VERY humid area, the dew point is over 65 right now even though it's winter), I'm still figuring out my hair properties actually... It's just so confusing. Lol! I think I have medium porosity, I have minor bumps on my hair shaft... before I went CG I always thought I had super coarse hair (everyone was always like OMG your hair is SO coarse/thick), but I think it only LOOKS coarse because I have really HIGH density :O and my hair LOVES protein, so then coarse hair would be unlikely, too. Don't know whether I have fine or medium hair yet, though. And I have no idea what my elasticity is, lol! So the only thing I know for sure is that my hair density is HIGH. And my porosity is probably medium.

Lol sorry for long post

The longest I've ever plopped was 45 minutes and ruined any curl I had. 15-20 works best for me!

So I've played around for a week and have discovered plopping does nothing for me!

The microfiber towel really does rock and the re:coil stuff is working better than anything else I have tried. I think I've been using too tiny of an amount. I used more today (two quarters worth) and it's less frizzy.

I'm trying to cowash and only shampoo every 2 days. It's hard since I've been using so much Re:coil in my hair.

So I'm still playing around and trying different things... Any other tips of magical products?
I only plop for 5-6 mins
