Looking for products to shrink my curls... Not stretch

Like Tree4Likes

My curls are stretched out as it is. Can anyone recommend a hair gel and deep conditioner to help make my curls springy? I've been using As I Am products which I really like for their ingredients, but I want some things to shrink my curls and not elongate them more than they are already.
longawaitedhope likes this.
Medium texture, normal porosity, normal elasticity
This is what I'm looking for too but never realized

Can't wait to see some responses!

I know anything with protein makes my curls tighter and shrink more while moisture based products relax and stretch my curls.
I can't say I know any specific gels or conditioners that encourage shrinkage, but I do know a couple of techniques that cause my hair to shrink more.

First, applying products to my hair when it is not soaking wet. If I apply products to soaking hair, my curls elongate, but if I apply products to just damp hair, it shrinks up. I believe this is because the products are not sealing as much water into the hair, so the hair is lighter.

Second, plopping. The longer I plop, the more shrinkage I get. I'm assuming this is because the having the hair piled on top of the head means that its weight is not pulling the curls down.

I agree with CurlieCutie that protein can increase shrinkage for some people. This is a great idea for a thread and I hope others chime in with condish/products recs!

None of the products I use stretch my curl, I prefer it that way. So check out signature!
I second protein! Nothing shrinks my curls like a gelatin PT!

I do apply gel on soaking wet hair, but then I use a MF towel to scrunch out the excess water, and re-apply some gel to the ends.

Then I plop. I'll use a flour sack, or if I need to speed drying time further I'll use a MF towel.

Also, by coincidence I put my usual products in my hair today after drying it more than usual, and also tossing it around and scrunching the products in and letting my hair finish drying more messy than usual (hard to explain, but just played with hair a bit and separated hair so it wouldn't dry all in one piece so to speak) and I have more volume now. So u may be right about applying products in semi dried hair. I can't wait to try plopping it!
Medium texture, normal porosity, normal elasticity
Also I combed my hair upside down, which made the crown hair "messier" and gave it more volume
Hootenanny likes this.

Along with volume I think the freedom my strands got from scrunching helped them curl individually

Does anyone apply product before & after scrunching and/or plopping?

After plopping, I sometimes will use a spray gel and gently scrunch with the towel a couple times.

I have to start with very wet hair to establish some clumping and keep frizz and springiness at bay. But I have to then scrunch water and weight out of those clumps to keep the curls from stretching. (And have to add a little gel back in to my then damp hair before plopping.)

So I guess I sort of do BOTH things.

I usually squeeze out most of the water in my hair with a microfiber towel, then apply my products, then plop with another (dry) microfiber towel for awhile. Then, I let the plop down and wait for my hair to be about half-way dry (I don't diffuse, but only because I'm lazy). Finally, once the hair is half dry, I almost always apply some KCCC. So, yes, I for one do apply products before and after plopping. This works great for me when I want my curls to be tighter.

The Smasters method does something like this along with diffusing, and a lot of people swear by her method. There's a thread on the Smasters method around here somewhere... I think it's part of the "techniques" sticky?

I just recently experimented with using brown flax seeds instead of golden to make my flaxseed gel. I got significantly more shrinkage and tighter looking curls with the gel made from them than anything I have ever used.

I find Deva ultra defining gel defines my curls so good I actually get too much shrinkage with it.
I have the same exact problem! My waves are not that loose, just very stretched out. Sometimes they get springy and awesome, but it's rare. I will be trying some of these tips! Also, I'd love to see more recs for gels/jellies, always looking to try new ones
