Newbie plop goes wrong

So I am brand new-like 2 days in! I went to Walmart today and bought brand new conditioner gel, and hair creme (all the ones I were using had silicone in them). I already use sulfate free shampoo but am going to only shampoo once per week instead of 3x per week.
Anyway, I showered last night and put in my product. I let it air dry until it was about 70% dry, then I had to go to bed. I plopped per the Youtube video and slepy all night. When I woke up my curls weren't frizzy, but they were kind of crimpy looking and weird shapes. Ick! What did I do wrong?
Thanks!
I am a newbie. I think I am a 2b. I have been blowdrying and straightening my hair for the last 15 years. Trying to embrace the REAL ME.

Maybe you're just a busy sleeper? The same thing happens to me haha. There's this trick called Pineapple-ing. When you put all of your hair in a pony tail on the top of your head, and it looks sorta like a pineapple. And I would usually let my hair air dry before hand.
If I plop, I only keep it up for about 15-20 minutes. Any longer and my curls get all wonky. I shower at night. Plop while I dry off, lotion up, put my jammies on, brush my teeth, etc. Then I take the plop down, apply a little more gel and reform any funky curls. I air dry then pineapple (hubby calls it my "chicken head") before going to bed. I also use a satin pillowcase. In the morning, I take the pineapple down, spritz with water, scrunch a little and I'm good to go.

Finding a routine that works well consistently for you takes time, patience and lots of failed experiments. Hang in there!

Thanks ladies. And sorry for all the spelling errors. I will proof read next time.
I guess what makes this change so hard for me is I have perfected how to fight my hair into straight submission. Now I feel like I am 12 years old all over again and have no idea how to do my hair to look cute! I'm kind of a high maintenance glamorous, full face of makeup kind of girl, so this is really killing me!
The first day I walked in, and my coworker said, "Wow. Somebody got up late!"!!!

Welcome to the curly world, Nancy! I have very fine 3b curls and found that I cannot plop most times- it just smashes my curls. I shower at night since I have the WORST time getting up in the morning, and found that if I let my hair air dry for about an hour, then pineapple my hair, it looks much better in the morning.

How does your hair look when you air dry? If your technique isn't working for your hair when it dries on its own, no amount of plopping or pineappling at night will save it, unfortunately.

Plopping isn't for everyone. I know it's not a popular method here, but I just do a towel turban (but I use a t-shirt instead of a towel) and dry it the same way I always have pre-CG.
