wash in shower = bad hair!
I have mostly always washed my hair in the sink, head upside down. But I got the curly girl book and thought I'd try again in the shower and finger comb while condish is in.
I usually wash in the sink and then comb with a wide tooth comb once I"m done and then scrunch while hair is still soaking wet with a microfiber towel.
I get out of the shower and scrunch, I could see very little curl formation. But I continued on. Put in my gel and I could see the top part of the canopy just laying flat.
I finished up because I didn't want to re-do everything in the sink but the shower does NOT work for me. I have fine, thin hair and I'm thinking the weight of the water flattens it out??? I don't know.
I thought I would get more curl formation if I didn't run a comb thru it but not so.
Anyone else have this same issue?

I'm going to try washing my hair in the sink. It may be difficult due to the length of my hair though.
I usually do the last rinse of my hair (in the skier) upside down to help with root lift/curl.

you can still wash your hair upside down in the shower. i do it right side up and upside down to get it evenly wet, and then evenly rinsed before i put in leave in. i finish up with it upside down.

I comb mine out (in the shower -no way I could use a sink!!), and then finger comb. This way I can lift the roots and reform the clump. I HAVE to use a comb - fingers would not be enough for my snarls!! (But my hair is very long, fine, porous, and prone to tangles)
A lot of people rinse upside down in the shower. (I don't bc I have neck problems.)

I could never wash my hair in the sink,my hair is very long and thick and I find it hard to get my hair sopping wet if I wash any other way. I just do everything in the shower, it does get to be a hassle when I wash, condition, detangle and then get out to put my deep conditioner in and then after leaving it on for an hour having to get back in the shower to rinse ...I hate having to get all wet again after I've just showered but I do it.

+1 to Ericachristina. I could never fit all dat hair in the sink. I tried rinsing upside down once in the shower but my hair got way too tangled. It's just a hot mess. Nobody's fault but its own. Ignore it please.
& try rinsing upside down if it's worked for others! But if not, just do what works for you. I also get very annoyed when I try something that's tried and true for others but fails me. But ah well. You've got to do what works for you.

Ha, ha... that's my thing - I get mad when it works for so many but not for ME!!!! I hate going upside down in the shower getting water in my ears and eyes etc.... I"m weird but I can't stand that feeling upside down.
I have shorter hair so I can do the sink but I can see how you long hairs can't with all that hair

Hi!
My hair is medium-fine, low density and i had the same issue when i was at APL (now i have it cut into a bob).
I think the problem is due to the fact that washing hair in the shower, keeping the head upright, cause the crown roots to stay flat (parallel to the scalp) and the result is flat canopy and bangs.
To get rid of this problem i wash my hair upside down while if i'm still in the shower (i slightly bend over).

That must be it. The fact is when the water hits the top of your head it is, like wurlygirl said, encouraging it to lie flat and since it's shorter you can't show off volume anywhere else. I love root volume as much as anybody else but I think I still need the pressure of the water to get my hair to lie in place since it's so rebellious and wants to tangle. I may try rinsing upside down again though. Maybe the root volume is worth it.
