Diffusing not helping my curls :-/ help!

So here's the issue... Among many lol.... My hair takes 4 hours to air dry (low porosity I assume), but I wash it daily because its fine and there's no such thing as second day hair for me (so I use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner after, as well as leave in and gel) and it gets build up very easily. Anyway, I find when I diffuse with my blow dryer my hair is even frizzier than usual which is bad enough, and my hair is more wavy rather than curly anyone else notice this result with them too? Idk what to do... I can't wake up 4 hours early to accommodate for drying time! Please help! My hair is driving me insane! I'm not even high maintenance and yet my hair is -___-

Your hair sounds similar to mine...fine and no second day hair...but I diffuse everyday and find it makes my hair much curlier than if I air dry. What I do is this (I'm just gonna give you my whole routine if any of it is helpful to you)
-in shower: shampoo about once a week, use conditioner and rinse it out, put a small amount of suave conditioner in as leave in a comb through with a wide tooth comb, scrunch in suave captivating curls mousse
-scrunch my hair upside down and wrap in a flour sack towel while I get dressed and brush my teeth
- take hair out of towl, scrunch a bit with towel, and make sure it is laying how I want it
- diffuse using pixi curl method- turning blow drier on after it is placed in my hair and then off again to move it and repeat. I do this six times around my head, then flip my Haley's over an do it twice. All in all I spend 10-15 min doing this
-let my hair air dry for about 20 min, then gently shake the roots and get it laying nicely
-wait about 5-10 min and scrunch hair in upwards motion
-smooth a bit of smoothing cream lightly on outside of hair

It has taken me forever to figure out this routine, and my hair still looks great sometimes and not so much others. The more I touch it- especially when wet- the more frizz I get.

Hope this helps!!
Hair that freely borrows from 3a/ 3b texture schools. These are the things I use to care for it:
  • Apple Cider Vinegar rinses weekly
  • shampoos occasionally that do not contain sulfates
  • conditioners without silicones or proteins (or so I think- Keratin seems to do ok)
  • Flour sack towel
And I dont even know what else right now...thinking I may need to drop gels altogether...

Currently have Shea Moisture and DevaCurl products that I may just need to give up on and cut as a loss...
Yeah, I was going to suggest scrunching (gently) with a MF towel, plopping, then pixie diffusing until about 50-75% dry.

Honestly most of the time it's the roots you have to get more dry bc they'll take the longest. I pixie diffuse my length, then go back and set the diffuser at my roots, lifting the hair with it just slightly.

I also jaw clip the roots, and that has helped with drying time and root volume.

HTH!

my hair always frizzes if i use a regular diffuser/dryer. i can only use ionic diffuser/dryers. i know everyone's hair has different reactions, but this has been mine consistently. when i go for a haircut i usually leave with it wet, unless it is cold and i am not going straight home, then i use the non-ionic diffuser there and i end up with frizz.

also, i've noticed on the boards that those of us who say we cannot get 2nd day hair have low elasticity, our curls do not spring back so well. i do not think it has to do with texture.

I use jaw clips in my hair to help get more volume on top as well. But I've never heard of pixie method... can someone please give me more detail on what that is? I saw what summer wrote but am still a bit confused. Thank you all for the help. Also, I agree with elasticity, b/c my curls aren't tight enough to springup but the ones I do have don't go back if I pull them, they just stay stretched out

I dry my hair right side up. I collect a section of hair into the the bowl, scrunch it up toward my head with the diffuser, and hold it there for two minutes. Then let it fall out of the bowl and move on to a new section. If I move my hair around too much when I'm diffusing it than it will get super frizzy.
