What is "2nd day hair" to you?

Like Tree14Likes

I'm wondering what it is that makes some of us have hair that looks pretty much the same for days, while others are on a "2nd day" quest? I thought maybe it was a loose-curl pattern thing, but some of you have hair that's as curly as 3b/c or 3c (And I'm guessing 4s and 2s vary in their experience w/this too). Could hair properties have anything to do w/it, I wonder? Like maybe people with finer textured hair have curls that are more easily disrupted by friction (like when sleeping), as opposed to coarser hair? Hmm.

Yes, a very good question!

I know my porous was plays in sometimes. My curls sometimes lose moisture overnight. When I use a humidifier they do better. Sometimes I'll add some oil before bed. I get 2nd day hair more often on the summer.

My hair is a mix of fine and medium, but I could see how course curlies may have it easier in that respect.

I consider 2nd day hair basically get up and go hair, with less than 5 minutes of work on it.

I have medium to coarse hair (definitely leaning toward coarse) that is low porosity (for the most part), and really dense.

I have never gotten "true" second-day hair IMO. Pony-tail hair/half-up half down worthy hair, yeah, but not truly "down" unless I spend about 15 minutes with water/conditioner. I think it's because my hair is at that short-ish length where a pineapple is not that effective, but it gets really smushed by the satin sleeping cap.

I have I guess what you'd call "natural layers." They just grow like that... in various patterns and strand widths. I have a coarse layer, finer layer, medium layer, ringlets, wave-ish things, random straight pieces, random kinks...

Yeah eLizard, maybe I'll post the question as a thread starter tomorrow (time permitting). I really would like to know what the heck explains the difference in "curl preservation" from one day to the next. ... I see what you mean about humidity Jas. So good, looks like we have one factor nailed down - meaning it could be assumed others have your same reaction to "sleep time" humidity coaxing curls to last into the next day

Perhaps! Maybe it's just porous hair is harder to preserve, bc it tends to lose moisture overnight more than others? Idk.

Pineapples have not worked for me. They just fall out, or if I put them in tight enough to stay they kink my hair and pull out some of the curl. :/

I have porous hair and have my routine down enough to get 2nd, 3rd, and 4th day hair, though day 4 is often an updo. I always use a sleep cap and go heavy on product on day 1 if I'm in a mood to go 4 days. I also am strict about sealing.

But, with the extra low dew points right now, 2-3 days is more preferable than 3-4.

Med/Coarse, porous curly.
i rarely get "get up and go" 2nd day hair. but i still consider it 2nd day hair if i don't have to go through my entire wash routine again.

my hair is low porosity, coarse and dense. the density is the biggest factor in my not achieving shake and go hair. pineapples do not work, my curls get pulled out in the back and there is no such thing as a "loose" ponytail for me.
everything gets mushed and matted.

however, i've been trying this "marge simpson" method with a scarf. pull all the hair up as if you're going to pineapple and tie a satin scarf around your head. my curls are not as crushed in the mornings this way.

Are you talking about essentially a dry plop? Or are you using the scarf to tie a pineapple instead of a scrunchie? I'm not quite following what you mean here...

I have had some luck with dry plopping. Thought about misting and then plopping to see if that does anything... Idk.

My husband already thinks I'm nuts. Lol!

I'm talking about the sleep caps sold in the 'ethnic' hair areas. I put my hair in like a plop. I don't use a pineapple.

I am high porosity and high density - sleeping usually doesn't bother my hair. I don't get extended hair if I play with it to much or if I pull it back into a French braid or something similar. Once the curls get pulled out, they don't come back unless I rewet it.

Well, there goes that theory!! Lol!! Honestly I had no reason to think that was the issue, except that I've noticed my hair does better over night of there is some moisture present.

Hmm... I am still curious what causes it! Perhaps it's the fact that I have insomnia and toss and turn a lot - lol!

Oh, right ... how much a person tosses and turns has to be another factor

I'll add another one: How much a person touches her hair.

I've thought about trying a satin scarf or something along those lines. Generally my hair is a hot mess in the mornings. Dry, tangled, & it feels gross. It just feels dirty. Even if I used all natural products. I still hate all hair products & the way they feel, regardless of what it is or how much i used, I just grudgingly use the ones that give me the best results. Anyways, I digress. I can't stand myself if I don't at least get it wet daily. So I've basically given up on 2nd day hair.
fine, thin, normal/(low?) porosity. Mod-CG. Usually I can't co-wash more than 1x a week, & sometimes I have to use T-Gel in rotation due to scalp issues.

Had 2nd day hair today!! Though mid day it was a little frizzy and very dry and tangly.

Right now it still looks ok, but it feels like hay.

Second + day hair is when I can wear my hair down. I do have to restyle with spritzed water and/or product, but if I can get it to look decent without doing a whole wash or cowash, then it's a success in my book.
2c, fine, extremely dense, color-treated, high porosity.

Someone mentioned on another thread that the defining factor in getting second day hair may be elasticity. If your hair doesn't bounce back well when stretched the curls can't reform themselves after stretching. I got normal elasticity on my hair analysis, but whenever I pull my hair back in a ponytail, I can't wear it down after that. The front part that's pulled back will more or less stay straight. I've always been envious of people whose hair could bounce back.

Before doing cg and when my hair was longer, I would wash it at night and get up and go the next day. Since it was long the top (part that got slept on) was a lot straighter. Plus before I got in the working world I didn't care as much about how it looked. Now that its much curlier whether from being shorter or cg, I am never truly happy with how it looks in the morning even if I'm willing to live with it.
