Default Whatever happened to....

In my quest to find the "right" product I have spent countless hours and money. And while I love reading NC, often I find myself suckered into trying yet another product. More often than not, I don't like the new products!

So, I am thinking of going back to basics and back to past products. I am looking for suggestions as well as sharing on products that you have used for more than 10 years. These are the ones that you have always come back to or rediscover after long absences. They are the ones that work no matter what is "popular" right now.

For me, I always ended up back with Aveda Be Curly even though I know it gives me halo frizz by the end of the day. I just like the "feel" of this product. I use it with Phomollient or Confixor.

I also always have Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam and Super Sculpt in the cupboard. Again, they aren't perfect but have a nice feel.

One "old school" goodie I am trying is Biolage Geele. I am undecided on this one so far.

I wasn't caring for my hair properly 10 years ago, but I can share what I've been using for the past 5 years.

Kinky Curly Knot Today and Curling Custard
Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose and White Camellia conditioners.

Products I've used for 2-4 years.
Joico K-Pak Reconstruct. Only in high dew points.
Kinky Curly Come Clean
Curl Junkie Curl Rehab

Products in the 1-2 year range that will probably go long haul.

Castor oil

Kinky curly products are products I always come back too also no matter how much I experiment with new things!

I think that's a difficult task. Most products have formula changes, so few are consistent for 10 years. Personally, I've only been using products for about 6 years. When you're first on nc.com, you want to try every product that anyone mentions. Eventually, you get to know your hair and it becomes easier to know what it might like by reading the ingredients.

I'm an acknowledge product slut. I doubt I'm using anything that I used five years ago. I do occasionally use KCCC. However, if I couldn't get it again, it would be fine. I continue to use natural soap bars to cleanse.

Back when I joined NC Kenra and Elucence were super popular. I never got into those two though.

"...I find myself suckered into trying yet another product. More often than not, I don't like the new products…"

Good point. I'm still obsessed with trying a new product that somebody mentions they had any luck with. The grass is always greener. You don't realize how great your hair has been doing until you try one of these "amazing" new miracle products.

I have been using kcnt, ufdcm + bhrg, until yesterday...I've been doing the EXACT same hair routine for most of the winter and yesterday my hair looked stringy and felt so greasy. I guess you can OD on the same hair products!

I changed it up completely today with Curl Keeper and Curl Queen. What? I had to do something different! I just wish I knew how to use half of what I have.

I haven't been at this for ten years, but I think I've tried ten years worth of products. Regardless of the amounts of conditioners that have been through my bathroom, I keep going back to Tresemme Naturals.

Karhymack brings up a good point. I wonder how many formulas in a given product are the same as they were ten years ago.

I hope Kinky Curly doesn't change. I recall their last price increase. The explanation was that the raw materials were costing more, and she didn't want to change the formula. I'm quite great full. It's easier for my picky hair to pay a little more than to find something else that will actually work.

I get "suckered" into trying new products as well but I don't mind because I like trying new things especially when I find something that's works well. When I don't like something I try to give it away to family or friends and see if they have better luck with it, sometimes it works for one of them.

There's another big problem, not just price increases. I know that Donna Marie hasn't been able to make the Curling Gelly for months, because one of their suppliers went out of business.

I've only being using products for the last three years or so. The only product I started with and am still using is BRHG and CJ Curl Rehab. In the past two years, I've consistently used Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic and maybe CJ Curl Queen?

In the last year, I've really liked Redken Fresh Curls shampoo and CJ Beauticurls.

Not 10 years - I haven't been at it that long but staples for me are:
Tresemme Naturals conditioner
CJ's Beauticurls leave-in
CJ's CIAB
Alfaparf mousse (recently revisited and very glad I did)
Kevin Murphy's Motion Lotion.

I honestly think my hair's as good as it's going to be, I'm happy to stick with these products and have stopped wanting to buy every product I read about.
I agree with kathymack - you get to know your hair and what it likes and dislikes ingredient-wise so I can resist the temptation to be a pj these days!

I began using fruit of the earth aloe vera gel over 10 years ago. I still find myself going back to it. I tried angel years ago, but didn't like it.
