how to take advantage of our natural oil production

I have left the brush now for years, and my curl is way more curly!! Yeah, no complaints, there. Even with no products, I have big ringlets, so maybe I'm a 3?? Anyway, just wondering, I'm trying to lowpoo less because of dry scalp and I just usually do a water rinse daily since I sweat daily working out. But then I thought, I can get weighed down roots at times, oil I think, and I wonder, man. . . if we shouldn't brush, are there other ways of getting that natural oil to move down the hair shaft a bit and nourish our hair instead of just lowpooing to get rid of it?? Does anyone know of a way to take advantage and use our natural oils?? thanks
OH and I want to try and prepoo oiling session. But does that mean I'll have to use more lowpoo to get the oil out? then that would kind of defeat the purpose of babying my dry scalp, no?? to moisturize it first and then give it a major lowpooing!!Thanks for chiming in!

I'm not sure about how to get the oil down from the scalp but for me the longer I go without washing the more oily my hair tends to get, like you though I'm co-washing almost every day due to my workout schedule. For me having such long hair it's almost impossible for the natural oils to reach my ends where I need it the most so sometimes I just add a bit more leave in or oil to my ends.

I like doing an oil treatment before I wash but I don't do them very much anymore because I do need to use a sulfate free shampoo to remove the oil and I have to shampoo two to three times to get it all out so I don't do that quite so much. If I don't wash the oil out it leaves my curls a bit limp and greasy which I don't like at all. Some people can actually rinse out most of the oil using only conditioner but this just doesn't work for me.

I don't think there's any way to direct sebum to go in a particular direction. For example I secrete an excess of sebum but for the most part it just spreads all over my face giving me a lovely greasy face look. And yes, it's about as "lovely" as it sounds. Lol.. you could probably use a penetrating oil on the hair.

This writeup goes into it a little: Does Sebum Protect Hair
I've heard of "brushing" with a washcloth but I've never tried it.

I saw this on the Long Hair Community but have yet to try it. It had pics when I first found it, but they're missing now.

I think if you co-wash (or even just condition) instead of water rinse alone it can help balance out the sebum. Co-wash or condition, comb through, then rinse out and style as usual. See if that makes a difference!

If you need more oil for the ends, I suggest trying jojoba. It's supposed to be the most similar to our sebum.

Another choice would be Grapeseed oil.

glad to know others have thought about this, not just me. The massaging technique sounds the best, as long as I try to be gentle or it sounds like you could pull hairs out. I wasn't as concerned about how to get oil to my ends since I know just water rinsing and adding conditioner is helpful. I was more interested in how to make use of that sebum on top since I know I get plenty of it and it can weigh my roots down. That is my real interest in wanting to get it off the roots and move it somewhere!! I don't know how much a pure water rinse with warm water does on getting oils off roots and moving them down.
