What do you use to seal in the colder months? Is it too light?

Just asking out of curiosity. I live in a Mediterranean climate so I just use jojoba and GSO interchangeably to seal.

I keep GSO in my rotation of oils to seal with. I also use it on my face and neck for added moisture, and even on my chapped lips when I couldn't find my Chapstick. Love it.

My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!

I just started using GSO last week and I love it. I like it a little better than the EVOO I was using. I use it to seal, massage my scalp, and for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th day hair! I am going to also try putting it into my knot today to see how it is

I've been using grape seed oil to seal the last few washes. So far I really like it!

Do you use a specific brand or type?

Thanks for the recommendations

What's the difference between jojoba and GSO (besides price )? What I'm asking is why do you mention your climate - is there some criteria for choosing one over the other based on climate?

I put it in my okra gel, but haven't tried it as a sealer, since I really love jojoba....but after reading this thread, I will!

Oh I was saying that to me there is no difference (that's why I use them interchangeably) because I don't live in an area prone to humidity or extremes. It's a very equable climate. So I was wondering if people who live in different climates go without a sealer in the winter or maybe use something else that's lighter or heavier. I'm always curious because my hair has yet to encounter say a Northeastern winter or a Florida summer.

The main fattty acid in grapeseed oil is a polyunsaturate so it is a sealer for hair, pointless using it as a deep treatment because the vast majority of the fatty acids will not absorb. Won't have any magical properties for the scalp other than being an occlusive either since neither linoleic acid nor oleic acid are important components of the skin barrier.

Like I said grapeseed oil will act as a barrier/ occlusive as can any oil including mineral oil. It's lower in oleic acid than some common oils - olive, avocado, sweet almond, shea butter especially east African - and oleic acid is a known irritant so can cause or worsen scalp issues in susceptible individuals.

I had amazing results from shea butter on my atopic eczema years ago, turned out the reason it worked was simply that it was protecting my skin from the shampoo bubbles running down my arm, it wasn't nourishing or miraculously healing in the way it initially appeared to be, I was suspicious because aloe vera had zero effect yet it has proven healing properties. Dropped the shampoo, my skin healed itself within a week no need for shea butter.

Would be interesting to work out what the grapeseed oil is forming a barrier against, dehydration because you live or work in a dry climate? Overwetting of the skin during lengthy/ frequent showers or lengthy/ frequent deep conditioning treatments? An irritant in another product or your tap water? It may or may not be something you can change.
