My natural hair is a 3b but currently it barely curls..three years ago I straightened it everyday for 2 years also while going back and forth from blonde to brown to blonde again. I'm officially trying to get off coloring my hair and Id like to wear it natural, only it doesn't curl. Does anyone have any product suggestions to get my hair back to normal? I only wash every 3 days and I do the plopping method to enhance some curl but it still needs help. Anyone have any input??im attaching a before and after picture for a reference of how much curl had been lost. Please also note the before is of it wet so it's even curlier dry. Fried hair help!!-imageuploadedbycurltalk1361160489.374407.jpg my after and Fried hair help!!-imageuploadedbycurltalk1361160580.080017.jpg. My before please please give me advice!!
Is your hair also dry?

Assuming the hair isn't irreparably damaged, try a protein treatment (will help with droopy curls) followed by an intensive deep treatment.

Do you know any of your hair properties, so I can offer a more specific recommendation? Things like porosity, strand width (fine, med, coarse), etc.

By the way, "only washing every 3 days," is not particularly descriptive. What products are you using? Low-poo? Conditioner wash? Sulfate wash?
Hair Type: 3c, Med-High Density, Low Porosity
Low Poo: KC Come Clean
Condish: AOHR, TN (Avocado), TJ Balancing Moisture
Leave in: GDL, KBB
Curl Lotion/Gel: CHS/CK
Others: CJ Curl Rehab, Jojoba Oil

i tried a PT treatment the other day (was scared of drying out my hair further so I mixed a LI cream in), and it was CPR for my curls & my fried ends!
2B/3A: fine, dry hair that "wilts"
but seems to love protein!!

Blended Cutie Silky Swirls Shampoo, Eden BodyWorks Peppermint Tea Tree Conditioner, Giovanni Nutrafix, Nutress Protein Pack (PT), Fairy Tales Coco Cabana Leave-In Sun Spray, Nutress Stop Break (LI), SSCEJ, Giovanni Magnetic Gel (styling), Turbie Twist (for plopping)
I had the same issue it's healthier now but still have lots of damaged hair left. I don't want to chop it of completely so I'm trimming it away little by little. One thing that helped my hair regain its curls was protein treatments. I do one once a week and obviously staying away from sulfates and silicones. Good luck

Sandi,
Yes my hair is very dry! It's porous and very coarse, huge strands like a horses. My shampoo and conditioner are goldwell for curly hair that I use every three days. Would you suggest a different brand that's gentler? I'd take any advice!

Tiara,
You tried the protein treatments and it was CPR for your hair? What does that mean?

I get my hair cut every 6 weeks on the dot and take about a half inch off everytime. What protein and deep conditioning treatments do y'all suggest?
I would ask the ingredients in the conditioner and shampoo. You might want to try going CG, or following the CG method to see if it helps. (Do make sure to do a final clarifying wash before going conditioner-only, though).

About the protein + deep conditioning treatment things:

Protein treatments are intended to strengthen and fortify the hair strand. Since I have coarse hair (naturally protein-rich strands), I very rarely need a protein treatment, and only do it when my ringlets are drooping. Curlies always strive for that balance between protein and conditioner, to improve elasticity and definition, and also keep the hair soft and manageable (and of course, healthy!). Most find that a protein treatment now and then, as well as after damage has been done to the hair, helps bring back the spring in the curl.

As far as deep conditioning goes, I'd like to know more specific hair properties before I give more specific product (or recipe!) recommendations. There are no deep conditioning products that work for everyone. I'd assume your hair is on the porous side (because of the dyeing), and your strands are medium (referring to the width of the shaft), but I can't really get a good gauge.

If a protein-laden conditioning treatment (or a protein treatment followed by a DT) doesn't do anything for you, I would recommend going CG while you get to know your hair (I assume your current products aren't working, based on your post), as the products are often a bit kinder on the experimental side.

I believe there's a link on the newbie forum about the CG method, if you would like to try it.

i like to wear my hair curly, but i've felt like i can only do it on 1st day fresh out of the shower hair, and even if it starts out pretty, my curls are wilted, flat, and lazy by mid-day. and forget about perking the curls back up 2nd day!

i've peeked around naturally curly occasionally for years, and have tried to avoid sulfates and 'cones in my products, but i've recently realized that i need to overhaul my whole 'vicious cycle' haircare routine (overmoisturizing by co-washing with a drugstore hair masque is a big culprit!) to have healthier hair that acts the way i want it to so i got serious about getting & applying all the useful info this site has to offer.

my 1st 'new hair stuff' purchase was the Giovanni Nutrafix Hair Reconstructer (PT) & Fairy Tales Energizing Leave-In. Mixed those together, applied to wet hair, left it in overnight, and woke up to soft, shiny, bouncy hair! once I rinsed it out, i was able to scrunch in some gel & have a great (curly) hair day for the 1st time in awhile! that's what i mean by CPR.

Since going bald is not an option I had to find alternatives. GVP PT has worked really good for me and it doesn't dry my hair it's pretty cheap and easy to find. I've been trying to do the gelatin PT but I'm always pretty busy so it's easier to just purchase something. Unfortunately I love dying my hair so I want to try SM hair color line and hope that will cause less damage.

patience is the keyword!! Hello ! here you can see how my hair was right after i stopped straightening it, and how it is now. your hair is damaged due to heat, it takes time to heal use Protein treatments and deep conditioning after that, STOP using the curling iron, it's also heat and makes your hair more dead and damaged
I've definitely stopped using the straightener/curling iron. Every once in awhile ill use it for special occasions but even that's rare. I'm gonna try the CG no poo conditioner cleaning way, I saw the blog with all the pics and wow they look great! Thanks!!
