There's this kid in my school with afro hair but he somehow lays it flat?

Nothing is my guess. The poofier hair is a combed out version of the other hair. My hair grows down, but if I comb or brush, especially if it's shorter, it it will poof out.

ITA. Most people who have 3b or curlier hair will have a frizzy Afro or poofy big hair when they comb their dried hair. His hair seems to naturally grows down.

Yea he said that the poofy version of his hair is just de tangled, but I don't understand what you mean I guess? Like you just wake up? Cause when I wake up my hair is WAY poofier than when I go to bed. XD

It depends on a person's texture, length and the climate. When I live in a place that isn't dry and my hair is healthy, then usually I wake up to 3b curls that are shiny and defined. Currently living in the desert with short hair, I usually have to style my hair wet to get it not to look like bed head.

I'm guessing he uses conditioner and gel on wet hair and let's his hair air dry. If he doesn't touch it while it is wet, then his hair will dry relatively frizz-free. To get the hair in the first pic, he probably combs or brushes his previously styled hair while it is dry.

Agree with everyone here: he's combing/brushing/picking his hair out in the first pic.

Love his cat sweatshirt in the last pic, btw! I gotta get me one of those. :)

Basically in the poofy picture, he combed his dry hair so it frizzed and got Afro like. (Poofy)

In the flat picture he added product while it was wet and let it dry without disturbing the curls while it was drying. So it lays down.

My hair semi lays down when it's wet and full of product, but once it dries it's "up". I'm really not sure if my hair grows "up" or "down" because my hair's not long enough to tell yet. I think I'd be happy either way.

Anyway, hope that clears the mystery of the sudden afro up a little. :p
