In search of gel comparable to Biosilk Rock Hard Gel

Does anybody know of a gel that compares to Biosilk rock hard gel?
It is my absolute HG! I use it over sm coconut hibiscus milk and I get shiny well defined chunky curls that hold for 3 days. I can't get it on the ground here ,it is really expensive to order.
I have tried, la looks ( several ), eco style, flax seed, aussie instant freeze, garnier pure and clean, tresemme, ( good thing that they all work for my dd and I probably don't have to buy gel for her until she finishes high school in 5 years:-) )

Side note, Jas76 if you read this, how do you incorporate Epson salt in your conditioner or gel? Do you dissolve it with water?

I order my liter of BRHG from overstock.com for under $30... It lasts FOREVER! :)

Although it looks like its out of stock right now :-(.

:-) I am checking overstock every day right now hoping they will have it back in stock ! I do think it will last me long time since I don't need very much to get great results, but an alternative would be great too.

I believe there's a place on that page where you can sign up for a notification to be sent to you when it's back in stock. That's what I did.

Sadly I've never found a BRHG dupe. :/

As far as my Epsom adding goes - I just mix it in my palm with a little co-wash. If I mix it with gel I put it in with some LALS - that makes it dissolve easily, but makes the gel watery.

I also will use LAL beachy waves instead bc it has mag sulf.

HTH!

Have you tried flaxseed gel? Google recipe.

I love FSG, but it's no BRHG dupe. FSG has very light hold.

AIF and HESMU are the closest I've come across, but I haven't tried much that's not drugstore.

There are a couple gels from Sally's people swear by (not talking about ecostyler) - I think one is bioterra, and another is... I can't recall the name, but I think it's thinner, more like a glaze.

I've never found anything like BRHG unfortunately. Do you live in the US?

I found BRHG to be somewhat comparable to LA Looks Sport Gel. I actually preferred the LA looks, it was easier to "correct" my hair with it. BRHG: you apply it and live with how your hair turns out. Any attemps to add any more, or spritz - major frizz.

I so wished the LA Looks sports gel would've worked for me as I've heard some great reviews about it. I'm thinking about giving it another try though..love the scent and maybe it didn't work because the bottle I had was old  ? It's so inexpensive that its worth a try.

I wonder what the ingredient proportions are that make BRHG so good ( since there are other gels with the same ingredients that do not work as well ).
I have mixed a little with the la looks sports and with la looks curl ( pink bottle) , surprisingly the mix with the pink la looks works better then when I mix it with the sports gel.
But I only get the same result if I diffuse it for 10 min.
Jas76, I have tried the Epson salt with the gel and it gave me very consistent 3a curls, awesome curl enhancer!
To combat any drying out from the salt I cover my hair in conditioner the night before I wash and so far it is working well.
Does anyone know how the BRHG works in hot humid GA weather? I got great results with it with dew points in the high 60s, but I wonder how it will work in the heat that is sure to start soon.

In my experience, GF Pure Clean has stronger hold than LALSG! I used LALS for a loooong time (got it a month after i went CG a year ago and used it until I discovered PureClean a month ago) but as time went on, got less of that hold. So if you're thinking of trying LALS again, it might be worth trying PureClean as well.

It's strange, Jas, for me Aussie instant freeze had almost no hold whatsoever. The CVS nearest my school only has their generic version of LALS so I've bought EcoStyler, AIF, and PureClean in search of something with comparable or stronger hold and all I've been happy with is pureclean. also, when you add epsom salts to gel do you dissolve the salts at all? maybe it's because i got some sort of lavender-scented salts, but unless I'm remembering what they look like incorrectly (it's been a while), I'm pretty sure they're a bit big not to leave chunks in the gel.

asianrunner 02-24-2013 08:43 PM

LALSG left me stringy, lifeless hair. GF Pure Clean gave me short lived hold.

One suggestion is LAL Power Spikes. It has strong hold and no glycerin. (In not glycerin sensitive, really, though I do try to lessen the amount I use in lower dews.). It does have protein, though, so if your hair doesn't like protein that could be an issue for you.
There is also a "man-ish" scent to it, but it's mild and all my other products (condish, etc) over-power it easily.

As for the Epsom - it often dissolved almost instantly in hair gel. Both LAL gels it does, but the gel will also thin out and get a little watery.
